Don't get carried away, fellas. It is not the aluminium single OHC FPF engine. It is the little side valve engine from the 1930's and looks a lot like an Austin 7 or Ford 8.

Probably one of a batch made by them for Swift of Coventry; they got left holding the baby (actually hundreds of engines or at least the raw castings) when Swift went belly up in 1931. Most of them had generators or pumps added and went into Britain's rearmament after about 1933.

It is rumored to be a 36 model, I will have to look at the brass plate and see what it reads, its not alloy, its steel, I can lift it, similar to one in the series 1 trailer but earlier, mine has updraught carby under the manifold, the one in photo looks like downdraught solex, will post wha the plate reads maybe someone can decipher it

Co-incidentally, we collected a pair of these generators from Norfolk yesterday, and they are not the FW engine but the earlier SM engine, correctly identified as being once as supplied to Swift Motor Co in the 1930's before they went t*ts up.

There are a few around, ours are 1955 (dated from the meters on the control panel)

Lovely little engine, and we'd love to buy yours as well, but the small matter of 12000 miles between us makes it impractical.

Pictures (unedited 1280 X 1024) are on our website at:

through to

The pictures are being edited now and will become part of a new section on the sets in due course.

We have some good friends in Newcastle, NSW, but unless you're that close, we'd have to pass on the engine, pity that.

regards to all,

Peter

Let's not forget they were used in sports cars and racing applications because of their light weight.

I know there were a number of variants, but they were used in one of my "lotto" cars... the type 14 Lotus Elite.

So we are saying the Coventry is used in some cars? this would mean getting a flywheel and an electric starter would be possible as would a water pump, Would one make a nice little donk for a 16 foot putt putt launch? by this I mean a boat engine, I could fit a marine impeller water pump and make a water cooled exhaust for it easy enuff but is it worth attempting?

The installation in the Swift used thermosiphon cooling.

Would be a feasible boat engine, but you would need a marine gearbox, and I would strongly recommend heat exchanger cooling, as the engine is not designed for raw sea water.

Have you thought of advertising it in veteran car circles? There are a few restored Swifts about, and i would expect some of the owners would jump at the opportunity to pick up a spare engine.

Its one of those things I am in two minds about John wether to keep it and play with it later or off load it, as I collect all things military it came my way via a mate whs since passed on, so I buried it in the shed and forgot about it, my father in law and myself are considering building an old style open launch for bay fishing, the engine doesnt need be powerful 20 hp be plenty for this use but it needs a reliability factor, I have the radiator for it and its already in a frame so fitting a FNR BW box is no big deal my Engineer uncle can make the housing and any extra mounts and shafts, a little diesel could be ok too but I have this engine already and it hasnt seen much use,
