Just so I can get my understanding of christmas trees correct.
The tree device was only ever applied to equipment and vehicles which were on permanent issue to a unit AND that the piece of equipment was being transported somewhere else by an entity other than the unit itself. A bit like a luggage barcode label issued by an airline. Is that the idea? So it wouldn't be applied to a vehicle in a motor pool for example?

My understanding is that it was just a unit identifier for vehicles. Mine has multiple layers of these. The one posted is on the topmost mat black in that section of the guard (cam) but there is at least one more below it. I thought that units just applied them to their vehicles as sort of a property tag.

they were/are applied to personal gear as well backbacks echelon bags foot lockers etc any that may be taken on a deployment they are as diana said a bit like a bar code so the logistics people can send it to the correct place
 usally only on unit veh not pool but a veh may have been issued to many units over its life in the service just like personnel
