The GRC-106 and the GRC-160 are completely different radio's. The GRC-106 is a HF radio covering 2 Mhz to 30 Mhz at 400W! While the GRC-160 (a vehicle mounted PRC-77) is a Man pack radio in the VHF band covering 30 Mhz to 75.95 Mhz FM only. As for being a pig of a radio I consider them an excelent radio for there purpose being long range communication.

What I am saying is horses for courses a 400 Watt HF set is far better for long range communication than a UHF which is typically only line of site plus 10% compared to several hundred miles for HF. If UHF was so wonderful I guest all the flying doctor guys got it wrong (they use HF) for reliable long range outback communication. Quantas also use HF on all there international flights over the Pacific.

I'm not convinced that HF is absolutely reliable, especially as an emergency means as I've seen it in the desert being very sketchy but yes, it does transmit a over great distances unlike a UHF. My thought at the time we were comparing the ANPRC77 set to a UHF which is I'm pretty sure what the current military sets are, not this other box.

It's probably the only means for Qantas.

I have a 77 set manual I believe. I think a tech manual and an operator manual if it's of any use. But I don't have any of the army RATEL manuals, only Air cadet ones.
