UPDATE
Well... because i'm still at school (yr12) I can only go and work on my rover on the holidays which is why it has been such a long time since an update...
SO.. I'd like you to meet my friend PAIN - well that's what I have named my rover. Lets just say that there isn't much flesh left on my knuckles after this past week Before getting into the good stuff I would like to take this time to say that whoever designed these trucks SHOULD BE SHOT. Talk about bolts that are near impossible to get a spanner too!!!! . Grrrr bloody 38years or rusty bolts that have probably never been undone - hence the name Pain... anyway...First I needed to get her running and armed with new points, condenser and coil I attacked the ignition problem (no spark) with great success. After replacing all the parts, new oil and top up water she roared into life with the first flick of the key Not to bad for an engine that had not been run for a few years. And she ran like clockwork, I am glad to say there were no knocks, misfiring or weird noises in general. I didn't even clean the carby ![]() see for yourself, the smoke cleared to a crystal clear exhaust after a few seconds (please excuse my foul mouthed younger brother at the very end of the vid) YouTube - She finally runs (if anyone knows how to embed the auctual youtube player into my post please show me, I forgot how ) |

Okay she runs... so now what do you do???? - take her for a spin
![]() The suspension was frozen solid from lack of use and rust but it was pretty interesting, good for a laugh anyway YouTube - In cab view okay then what do you do???... flex her up course ![]() ![]() that front wheel is off the ground btw. This also established that all the 4wd system was working well ![]() ![]() got some pics or her in the sunlight too |

Time to dismantle
Next job on the list now that she was running and moveable was to remove the roof, a genuine aftermarket Athol Hedges item
This is how it went... ![]() YouTube - Land Rover Roof Removal and some after pictures, I couldn't remove the door top on the passenger door because one of the bolts was rusted in place... ![]() and where the roof landed... ![]() it all went quite smoothly except for the previous owner rivoting the canopy on in 2 spots at the back and silly me forgot to bring a drill to drill them out.... so we improvised which involved a bit of hammering ![]() |

We had to celebrate the removal of the roof... so we took her for another spin, this time i got to open her up a bit more an test the brakes. Brakes are a bit uneven but that could have been from the gravel road I was on, at any rate with a big stab of the middle pedal the rears locked up easy and she came to a grinding halt.
YouTube - another spin in the landy |

The real reason for dismantling the landy was to get a good look at the chassi rust and now came the hard part - removing the tub. This was the most annoying and time consuming part of my week with exception of maybe the seat box removal - what was LR thinking when they designed that!!!!!????
![]() but we eventually got it off after many liberal applications of penetrant and many skinned knuckles to produce something that looked like this ![]() And this is pretty much how it sits now... It's still running and driveable so I can put it in and out of the shed ![]() |

RUST!!!!
![]() Once the tub was off i could get a much better picture of what would be required to get my landy back on the road.... I was prepared for he rear crossmember to be unserviceable... I am lucky in that i have a complete replacement one that is at least twice the thickness of the old one as well as sleeves to connect it to (slide over) the remaining chassi past the rear spring hanger mounts. Some bragging pics of all my rust: ![]() All of this will be replaced, new brackets made up etc... I will be taking special care to preserve and restore the blackout convoy light to be reinstalled on the new crossmember. This next pic looks to be an old repair, there is a similar one on both sides. If I clean them up will the pass roadworthy? or should I be redoing the repairs to get rid of the rust??? ![]() Then there was the gear box crossmember to sort out ![]() |

I knew that there was rust in this area of the chassi but wasn't quite expecting so much...
The passenger side isn't too bad ![]() but i was not so lucky on the driver's side (remember click on thumbnail for bigger pic) ![]() So yea, not looking very good. Looks like most of the drivetrain will have to be removed to service the rust around the gearbox. The front half of the chassi is pretty good, just a littlt tiny bit where the front crossmember meets the chassi under the steering box - very fixable ![]() There is also this wing on the LHS of the chassi under the driver's side footwell. Looks like it has had it, I think i might replace this wing completly - it's weird because the passenger side oposing outrigger is rust free???? ![]() |

FIREWALL
I would describe my firewall as not good but not really bad either - i have seen worse ones on here
![]() Anyway pictures... ![]() The footwells have plenty of daylight visible but are serviceable in my opinion. The dash itself is pretty bad but I will probably cut the bad stuff out in favor of a custom, plywood dash... all my instruments need replacing too unfortunatly. Little bit of rust you can see above the tranny tunnle should be able to be cut and plated, same goes for the small amount on the engine bay side. I m glad that there is next to none in the actual engine bay. |
