All the hard work in the end pays off as I am really enjoying working on my 2a after a few hurdles

looks good a total pull down, are you replacing the wiring loom or is it just out for the rebuild?
I am shocked at the price of the rear crossmember, makes me wonder if the new one on my swb is from them.

keep the photos coming.

In my previous post I mentioned that the chassis may have been made slightly 'skewiff'. Upon reflection..I should have refered to the spring settings and not the chassis.
Sorry to be having a conversation within your topic Beckett...........

Tommy, the right rail is bent by about 15mm towards the left rail

G'day Folks

An Ex Australian Army Landrover with a bent/out of line chassis is not uncommon one only has to look at pics of landy's underslung under choppers, and in the 80's often had a Cam Net across the bonnet, and would be dropped the last few feet my 2a had a bent and cracked chassis on the left rail, back about 3/8 inch and a crack & buckle where the small drain hole is just behind the rear end of the spring reinforceing plate, with the vehicle as a bare rolling chassis, I took it to a panel beaters which had a chassis jig, with the photocopied page from a Haynes manual, also made a plate same thickness as the spring reinforcing plate that came back to the verticle support near the brake pipe outlet,(made a cardboard pattern ,then cut the steel to match) all up, the lot cost me about $120 from memory when painted, it is only rivet counters or those told by me that know vehicle has been on the road now since 1992

cheers

G'day Beckett

It may be worth getting a price for a military X member from the UK, places like P.A. Blanchard, who specialise in Ex Military Landrover spares, Javascript & Cookie Detection as it might be cheaper to purchase it from there than from Melbourne and quality could be better, the Series 3 wasn't as modified as the Australian 2a was.

cheers

thanks uncle, wish i hadda known about that place before i ordered them what is the difference with the military crossmembers? is it simply a matter of drilling some holes and welding the airlift brackets on or are they a different shape alltogether? cheers, bill.

G'day Beckett

I would suggest that you get on to Phoenix or one of the Series 3 boys to take a series of detailed photos of the rear X member and Email them to you with some diamentions so that you can copy those, the Airlift plates are bolt on from memory, and there are 2 strengthing plates on the X member as well, but those boys will sort you out as I have a 2a which is totally different at the rear

cheers

Here is a photo of the back of mine with it's first coat of paint (it will be black)

and before I did any work to it.

As you can see, the air lift grooves are a welded and integral part of the rear x-memember. However if you have the skills they wouldn't be hard to remake. Best option would be to find a good one on a chassis being wrecked and take that.
