It is so hard to find a decent rear cross member on those Series 3's isn't it.?

You look to be at the stage where you start say to yourself "what the hell am I doing?"

I am there right now with mine, I have just welded some plate into my crossmember, came up alright. My trouble is that I have found out that one of my front rails is out of alignment, by about 15mm............ Taken a bit of a knock.

Repro crossmember?
Where & how much?

Ha Ha! it has run through my mind. Four Wheel Drives sell repro rear crossmembers and outriggers Four Wheel Drives - Land Rovers New and Used Spare Parts - Homeph.(03)98 900 509 they ship anywhere. rear crossmembers have gone up from $175 to $330 though and I'm yet to see what quality they are but have to be better than whats on mine! What I love about remlr is if i ever get a little disheartened or lose momentum i just log on and share in everyone elses enthusiasm

G'day Gumby

I also thought that the rails on my S2A was out of alignment only to be told that this is normal and is built into the chassis when constructed. Something to do with the steering setup. Not sure if this is the same with the S3.

Someone on this forum should be able to clarify.

I can't see why it would be "normal" unless the bend is symmetrical i.e. both rails bend in, or out from the centreline of the chassis.

The way to check if the chassis is square, is to get a drawing of it from the workshop manual and using a plumb bob transfer the measurements with french chalk to a flat concrete floor. Then roll the car away and measure with a steel tape and a helper the distances between the reference points and see if they agree with the manual. There will usually be a tolerance (probably about + or - 3mm). More precise measurements can be done at a panel beaters with a decent laser frame-aligning machine,

Cheers Charlie

Mine is a Series 2/2A, Right hand rail looks out of alignment.

Which way are the rails out of alignment gumby. Is one higher than the other or does one bend in towards the other?

In my previous post I mentioned that the chassis may have been made slightly 'skewiff'. Upon reflection..I should have refered to the spring settings and not the chassis.
