Well done

Phoenix (Richard) should be able to sell you a copy of the Australian Army Land Rover S2A Repair Parts Scale on CD which is an absolute necessity if you're going to tackle an ex army Landy restoration.

Hanes manual

Does the hanes manual for the series 3 have a good description for overhauling the gearbox?

Not sure on the haynes one, I'll have to drag mine out and have a look.

REMLR does sell a manuals CD which has the army 2a parts book as well as the 2a workshop manual which is a digital copy of the 2 page factory manual.

Day 2 - Playing Around.

Whilst I await my workshop manual decided what the hell, lets start having a look. Below are photos of today's discovery.

Rang around today and got offered the following:
- whole windscreen assembly including frame and glass for $110
- head gasket for $30
Does this sound reasonable??

cheers

By the look of the head, I would say that you have a severe water problem. Not only is the rocker gear rusted but the oil looks to be contaminated with water as it is a milky colour.

This is the motor from my GS. It looked great until I took the head off. Water had leaked from the head gasket into cylinders 2 and 3. The water has rusted the bore and around the rings I'm taking this one out and replacing it with a runner.

Some of the REMLR boys should be able to help you through this issue.

G'day apjmcmahon

Hi Andrew, that looks like a good straight Series 2a, and a Suffix "D" chassis vehicle at that, it would have key/keyless start, cable wipers, flick dash switches and a cranked handbrake lever, the engine looks to have the earlier Solex Carby on it and the early screw type of distributor leads fixings, the engine bay is very complete and original, and everything is in place it just needs a wash so you can see everything,( the cheap degreaser from "Supercheap" is brilliant for this), and if you have water restrictions you can use one of those hand spray bottles to do in bit at a time for the detailed work

Those breathers, that you posted pics of, are crankcase and rocker breathers, and as you were advised, wash them in petrol/degreaser/solvent to clean them, do NOT oil them,as they are for letting the fumes out, not in, as they will oil up quite well in 10,000miles

The rocker gear tells me that you have a sump full of oil/water mix, probably from the head gasket that is blown across a water jacket, remove the head, and have it surface checked for warping and cracks, you will also need to replace the "Core Plugs" they are the aluminium plugs in the top and rear of the head, as they corrode away and you will lose the water and possibly cook the motor, (I know as that happened to me just on a year ago) these are threaded plugs and are readily available, I have the part nunbers for them somewhere, you will need a VRSH gasket set, (Valve Regrind Setwith Head Gasket)(about $55 from the Mob in Melbourne) that wil contain roughly the following, head gasket, rockercover gasket, manifold gasket, thermostat housing gaskets, (good idea to replace thermostat 72deg,$18/20) also replace the little straight bypass hose (Head to Block $5-6) and while you have the head off replace the welsch plugs (with Brass ones) 3 down the left side of the block under the manifold while the manifold is off,

If there is light rusting on the bore (no pitting) a light rub over with 380 wet/dry sandpaper should remove it, that should get you a functional motor to keep you going

Tune up data for the 2.25 litre 7:1 compression Landrover motor is:
Tappets: 0.10 thou inch-- hot or cold
Points gap 0.014-0.016 thou inch
Timing 90 octaine petrol: 6 degress Before Top Dead Centre (BTDC) Vaccuum disconnected
Timing mark on "K" suffix Motors front of engine left side adjacent to pulley, from vertical - 6*
-3*
-TDC

Hope that is of help for you, I have rebuilt several of these motors and have both the workshop manuals and the master parts books if you have any problems PM me

cheers
Uncle Ho
