As Jack has said, it is worthwhile to remove the ridge if you feel it is excessive and if you decide to re-ring the pistons. The only way to tell with any accuracy how good the cylinder bores are, is to have them measured with an inside micrometer and compared to data in the workshop manual, or getting the advice of an engine re-conditioner. Putting new rings in a worn bore works for a while if the cylinder is honed, but eventually the top ring breaks as it hits the ridge and you are back to square one. Try wriggling the piston crown when it is at top dead centre; there should be next to no sideways movement. If it does move; time to strip the block and find out how much wear there is on the rings, bore, pistons, crankshaft etc.
Looking at the photos it appears that the engine has been running rich, although this might just be from its last cold start before you disassembled it. If you have a valve spring compressor, you can remove the valve springs and test the valve guides for wear by rocking them sideways in the guide; excessive movment of about 0.5mm (radial) at the valve head means it is time to get the guides renewed and while it is at the shop the head re-faced. Tyres there is a few ways you can go. there are plenty of long lasting on road patterns about the place. I've got Sime Knovoys (dunno if available any more) that look and sound and ride similar to the original. GT Radials do a similar x grip as well.
However if you want bar treads you can get them from antique tyres for about $220 a tyre.

Just wanted to leave a tick in the box for the MRFs. I've got them on my Dodge and have no complaints.
You might get a better ride from the radial Steeltreks if you can find them, but if you want bar treads, MRFs are readily available and reasonably priced - $180 ea for 900 x 16s. Jack |

I don't believe MRF's come in the right size do they?
Steeltrecks are also a good option, can be expensive new, but a lot of 2nd hand ones are about the place at the moment.

Actually finally found nice green paint under the grime ![]() More concerning however, were these holes I found? any ideas help - is it bad, fixable, normal? what is under these soldered/tinned plugs? Thanks heaps Andrew ![]() sorry this one not as in focus ![]() ![]() |

Those are core plugs into the water galleries if i'm not mistaken, and they can be replaced
