there you go, found the source of your water in the motor.
Uncle would be able to describe how you repair them. On the ser3 2.6 head( even though its alloy it has the same setup,) plugs that look like they have been belted with a rough hammer and maybe soldered??

Yep when I cleaned all the oil and grease of my motor the layer of dark green paint that was on it after a service.engine rebuild came off and was left with the original duck egg colour, its ugly but interesting.

Welch Plugs

Got some advice on the plugs. Also suggested to me that I look at ones on the side also.

Quick question? are these upside down? suggested to me that they are normally put in the other way around?

Also - are these easy to source e.g. repco or are they from the more specialised places?

Looks like I identified the water problem

Thanks again to everyone for your help.

cheers

Andrew

G'day apjmcmahon

Hi, Andrew, they are "Core Plugs" that have died and gone to heaven just the same as the one's in my motor and in Muddy's ambo,

Here is the Info on them (Genuine part No's. use genuine)

Top of Head 4x RTC4250 core plugs, they are, 16 TPI (threads per inch)
Rear of Head 1x 230250 core plug, this one is, 14 TPI (threads per inch)
these core plugs are still available and are not dear, the rear one is the same as 2/300TDI motor

And the threads need to be cleaned with a thread file or a tap of that thread pitch,(preferably tapered) when the thread is cleaned, before screwing the core plugs in, coat them with "Stag" jointing compound (in a tube) as that will seal any inperfections in the thread, as these threads can rust from the water in the head, (when refilling the cooling system use the green anti corrosion stuff) this is becoming a common problem of late as with the water restrictions and the dams getting low, more chemicals are being put into the water to clean it for drinking and it is corroding the alloy faster (just think what is doing to your Gizzards)

This is probably why the Landy was for sale, Muddy's Ambo had the same problem which was diagonosed by an "Expert" as a cracked block (throw the motor away) and it was only core plugs, so 5 plugs and a VRSH gasket set and it is purring again,I blew my rear one at 95 kph on the way to a AULRO/REMLR run to Mt. Mee just on 12 months ago, was lucky I didn't cook the motor, the job is pretty straight forward and can be done by the home mechanic,or have the (supplied) correct core plugs fitted by an engineering shop, then it is just refit the head if you are getting an engineering shop to do it , get the head checked for warps/cracks while it is off, and/or get hardened valves and seats fitted so that you can run unleaded/E10 without any worries also replace the thermostat if in doubt of the one in there

cheers

Hi
If you are using a tap leave the last thread alone and clean it with a thread file roughly. Other wise you end up with two clean parallel threads and its not easy to seal.

G'day apjmcmahon

The plugs in the side and rear of the block are welsch plugs (cup type) and are fitted with the base toward the motor, which leaves a recess about 1/2 inch (12mm) deep, use BRASS ones for them as it saves them rusting out quickly, they should be available from all the usual suspects or British Off Road in Qld, www.britishoffroad.com.au

G'day apjmcmahon

If they are anything like mine were, a few gentle taps with a hamer and screwdriver and they will disintergrate and then you can pick the bits out with pointed nose pliers, and if the head is off, just turn it upsidedown and shake the remaining bit out the welsh plugs in the head and block you pierce with an old screw driver and lever out, when replacing these parts coat them with "Stag" jointing compound as that will seal any minor flaws in the mating surfaces.

cheers
