G'day Andrew

First question is....what type of restoration have you decided on and why?

Stuart,

Thanks for the reply.
At this stage it will be a running restoration for the next year or so, as I need to get her roadworthy for my very short commute to work.

So Plan of Attack is:

1) head gasket issues fixed
2) general cleanup
3) windscreen
4) new tyres
5) check out for roadworthyness
6) register and use
7) reassess and prioritise

Thats a plan anyway - a starting point.

Problem is I will have so many dumb questions to ask - lol.

cheers

Andrew

Day 1 Tasks Undertaken

1) Pulled off the bonnet
2) Pulled off air filter?
3) Pulled of two caps from pictures, and gave surface clean only? what are these, can I soak to clean out inside or are they a filter?
4) pulled apart air filter to have a quick look see - cleaned lid and inside lid
5) reassemble (hate to forget how it all goes together).
6) all these postings - sorry.

My cleaning

Crankcase breathers, are the first two,
can;t answer the windscreens obrien but a small screwdriver to take off the alu. angles on the inside will give you access to the glass, just push/pop it out yourself, and reinstall new ones yourself.

looks like an easy resto

One of the first things that I did when I got my first LRPV was to hunt down spare parts etc. I found heaps in our local newspaper - The Quokka. Your equivelant would be the Trading Post.

I now have enough spares to provide me with just about everything I need for my current and future restorations and it didn't cost all that much. I have 3 spare windscreens which I can remove glass from to replace any broken ones. You may want to make a complete list of 'wants' for Letty and post on this forum. I'm sure you will find what you want.

Just remember, don't remove anything unless you intend to restore and replace straight away. I learnt this very valuable lesson when I stripped down LRPV 175. I had her ready to sandblast but was forced to move everything to my current house as the owner sold the house I was renting from under me The restoration has now been put on hold

Letty looks to be in very good original condition so you have a head start on a lot of other members. As John says, it looks to be an easy resto. Can you photograph any damage or rust in the bulkhead as this will determine whether it will need to be removed or not. If it does, you will have the opportunity to undertake a 'deeper' restoration. If not, you can undertake an 'insitu' renovation such as the one I have just done.

Hi Andrew, and welcome to what can become a very satisfying and interesting pastime. Letty looks like an great project base to start from.
If you aren't really "up" on Land Rovers, probably one of the best investments you can make is a "Hanes" manual, available at most auto parts shops for a reasonable sum, although you may have to order one in as old "Series Landrovers" aren't the most commonly kept book on most shop shelves any more. These books arent really a workshop manual, but they have some good illustrations and will assist you with parts recognition and most of the things you are going to need to know during your resto, but keep in mind the fact that an 'ex army' vehicle such as 'Letty' will differ from a civvy one in quite a few different aspects.
Apart from that, search this site, ask a lot of questions, look at a lot of photos and have fun restoring Letty to whatever stage you wish.
Regards
Glen

Andrew
Andrew,

These are the breathers from your rocker cover and oil filler tube. If you need to clean the gauze inside, give them a bath in clean petrol or similar solvent, dry and dip in clean oil. Refit them when the surplus oil has drained out. They act in a similar way to the oil filter, ie the oily gauze catches the dirt as it passes through the breather.

These simple maintenance tasks are all explained in any good Series Landy manual.

Enjoy the restoration.

WELCOME TO THE CLAN L/R NUT MATE

Hi Andrew

And welcome to the REMLR SIGHT , its a good looking 2a you have and you certainly found the right place for assistance and advice I would discribe this forum as a brother hood for landrover nuts, nothing seams to be a problem to anyone and the bank of vehicle knowledge with in it, is beyond belief.
I have just started a restoration of a 1958 Ser2 88 inch i just call mine the little green machine cant wait to get it on the road, but it will be at least 12 months.
just a little hint that my make things easier for you
, As you dismantale a section eg front mud guards place all the nuts and bolts, washers etc in an old plastic butter container or simular container mix some molasses and water mix , about 1 part molassas to 2 parts water and pour over the nuts and bolts etc and let soak for about 2 - 4 weeks
then wash with water let dry and dip in a fine oil, they will be like new when you re assemble. I write on the container lid what they are from eg front guards it makes life very easy I find
A word of caution dont do this to any non ferous metals as you will wounder where they went.
