110 633's day out

For the first time in two years 110 633 rolled out of the shed for a wash under it's own power. Here's a few pic's. Still a long way to go, more problems than you can poke a stick at. Snapped a brake line while bleeding them this morning. One step forward two back. Regards Shaun.

Looking really good Shaun. Love the Tac sign, (1 ALSC Bien Hoa 1966) I'd love to think that that is the original, as if so there is a slim chance that we could possibly chase up its driver (1965-66) through our unit Assocn. with a bit more info. Do you know any of its history? What side of the river are you on? Would be very interested to see it in person one day, as my interest is certainly aroused on this particular vehicle.

Regards
Glen

Bien Hoa 65-66

Glen my uncle was with the 1ALSC at Bien Hoa. If you were there you will more than likely know him. I'm doing this one up to represent the unit he drove (111 897). The roo on the door is an accurate (at least as good as I can get) to the one on the above unit. Small world eh, regards Shaun.

I wasn't sure, as I hadn't seen that one before, I didn't mean to imply it was incorrect.

G'day Shaun

That is one nice looking Command Reconnaissance truck and it would be very welcome at the Military Jeep Club Swap and Field day at Canungra Showgrounds on 17-19th October 08 (third weekend) camping available there are about 400+ people attend this weekend and it is SE Qld REMLR's yearly get together we had 15+ vehicles last year.

cheers

The kangaroo on the door is a bit like the song "Waltzing Matilda". It was never an official sign, but was designed, drawn and applied individually by the diggers themselves in the early days as a result of National pride coming to the fore when a smallish Australian force was attached to, and came under the umbrella of the American 173rd Airborne Bde. and was regarded by the Americans as merely an attachment to their military machine. In an attempt to distance themselves from any such misconception, the Australians tended to brand their equipment as being Australian owned, and what better way to do this than to paint a Kangaroo on it. (I think the Yanks knew what a Kangaroo was, but the Noggies had no idea, they called it a "big red rat".)
This Kangaroo emblem began as an individual thing, different colours and designs, but was later replaced by a stencil that was (copied from the roo on the penny) cut (by the Q staff I believe, but still unofficial) and a copy of said stencil was carried by most mobile Aussies, along with a can of red paint, and a culture sprang up almost overnight where anything or anyone who strayed onto Australian turf was branded with a Red Kangaroo. There is a very strong furphy going around that even General Westmorelands personal Iriquois chopper was branded on the inside as well as the outside whilst it was under guard on a very brief stopover at the Australian lines. Some Kangaroos even found themselves stencilled in compromising positions with an American Eagle.
From this humble beginning began the "tradition" of painting a red Roo on a lot of our equipment but I dont think it was ever adopted as an "Official" sign by the powers to be.
Somewhere I have a shot of Land rover with the particular Roo on your door Shaun, and I was always under the impression that it had to have been done by someone more familiar with the Quokka than the Big Red.
Regards
Glen
