TEST DRIVE -- Landy issues

hi all,

I sorted all my brakes today on the FFR and took it for a test drive.
Brakes work, Clutch ok, then proceeded to drive on. about 15mins down the road the Landy missed a little bit while on the throttle but still ran then about 50 meters down the road it cut off. felt like as if it ran out of fuel. so i pulled over rolled to a stop got out popped the hood! couldnt find anything. (i did fill $25 of fresh fuel)

I let it sit for 5min and tried to start it on first go almost but cut off then i tried again with one foot pump to the accelerator pedal and she fired up! so i drove back home and didnt miss a beat! i flicked the fuel pump on however it was making quite a bit of noise!

Has anyone had a similar problem? I dont' know what caused this? maybe bad fuel or pump or bit of blockage! im not sure and keen to find out!
i also noticed the temperature on the dash sat on red and just under is that normal?

changes to the landy over christmas holidays were:
new radiator from an s3 + hoses
new exhaust manifold
new thermostat
change over water pump
replace belts
new front dampers.
Brake overhaul.

the Carby i havent touched yet.

the landy cut off on me once before about 3 months ago but not completley i was able to continue to drive on.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

cheers,

Chris

I would say your fuel delivery rate is low. If there is a mesh filter in the tank pick up it could be swollen (nylon mesh) or just blocked. Take the hose off the inlet to the pump and blow a little air back into the tank, may get it going for a while.

Chris,

Had a similar problem with the GS the other day. It followed after I swapped to the LH tank. The tank as it happened was either very low or dry and as a result sucked up a bit of rubbish from the bottom. This made it's way to the pump and caused similar symptoms to that you described. The glass fuel bowl at the pump also has a gauze strainer in it. Worth a look as well.

HTH

Thumbs up

hey thanks Fellas,

I'm a little embarrased about this but i accidently left the fuel tap on the LH tank which was pretty much empty. when i continued to drive the Landy back home after it cut out, i didnt even think of checking which tank the fuel tap was switched to. so it all came down to user error! LoL hehehe

The RH tank i have now switched over to. it does start up now and idling, gave it a few revs & no cutting out. I cant take it for a drive as its pouring rain outside at the moment so i'll go for a drive in the morning. well see what happens then!

i'll go back in the garage now and clean out the pick up lines and check the strainer in the fuel bowl.

cheers,

Chris

Don't be too embarrassed - you would not be the first person to do that (even happens in aeroplanes, where results can be much more serious).

In my first job nearly fifty years ago, one of our geologists walked 20 miles back to camp after the Landrover broke down. Mechanic went out with him to recover it; changed tap to the other tank, started and drove back to camp!

Thumbs up Fixed it......!

hahaha thats a good one John......!

well i just got back inside from the garage. I pulled the electric pump out and the filter connected to it and cleaned them both out. Also took off the Sediment Bowl, WoW! holy cow, i couldn't believe how much crap was in there!

i cleaned the glass bowl and brass filter, filled it up with a little fuel and put it back on. Also put the electric pump back on made sure the tank tap was set to RH side, turn on electric pump, then fired the Landy up. all good it started and immediatly the electric pump i could hear it much quieter.

so i thought the rain has stopped, might as well take it for a 20 min drive and it didn't stop on me at all.

all good its fixed.

i'll have to keep it on the RH tank for now also because its a new tank. as for the LH tank i will remove it and give it a good clean out.

Cheers,

Chris :

I have done it as well.......its is easy to knock the switch with your leg.......I can rememeber some one doing it on the way to Cooma.

I usually only use the one driverside tank........but use the second one on long trips as it drinks lots of fuel (Very heavy)
