Can't find any reference to this on the net. Would you have any links?

It is definatly not a Bamford.
It does look like a Thomas, you would find this name on the end of the casting on the input side of the winch. Thomas winches became winch industries, www.winch.com.au
I do have a diagram of the later type as used on the Aust Army 110.

Just checked the website ... it looks like one indeed. No name on winch though.

If it is the would be great ... they are just 1/2 hour from home. Could have them recondition it.

Thanks,
Dante

It is certainly a Thomas Winch, if not, then the earlier Shute upton Engineering (Qld) one which was built a bit earlier. It will be written on the round side facing the chassis, so you may need to remove the whole winch for a positive I.D. Both are almost identical anyway.
If I can dismantle mine without a manual, anyone can, and the fact it is siezed would tell me that there is corrosion on the shaft preventing movement and it needs stripping and a service anyway.
Some-one has extended the lever which indicates it must have been getting hard to shift, a lazy mans remedy. Looking at the pics again it might have been extended for access
BTW the shear pin is in the drive line in one of the uni joint boss's. If you break it (unlikely) when bogged you simply cannot acess it
In all, a brilliant winch, as long as your motor is turning.

Gday

Certianly not a bamford winch. I have a bamford 6000lb winch. That winch looks more like a Thomas. My mate has one on his cruiser and its very similar.

PS. There is a bamford on ebay at the moment for 1200 bucks which is a bargain if you want a winch.

if it is a thomas winch, you have any idea what it is worth. I am thinking of having it reconditioned, but no point if I can get a good working one cheaper.

While the winch is working it hasn't been serviced in 20 years, and I am thinking of replacing the cable - maybe with a dynarope.

Ring up a price a replacement. That might give you an idea of what a Thomas is worth new. Then work out what its worth to rebuild yours. Mine needs a new rope cable which is worth about 2-300 dollars but I may just shorten it yet.

Its easy to fix but requiers dismantalling to get the crap out of the brake side (where the handle is and de rust the guts of it...) nothing too complicated if your up for it.. The mechanism inside it is the same as the mechanism in the perentine winches with different tollerances.

I can help you with winch rebuild EMEI docs with pics but not the actuall measurements and settings...

Right, so .. after all your input I established contact with somebody in Winch Industries. All via email so far as I am currently in the US, but I think I will call him on Thu to see if I can come and visit to see if he can confirm make and model of the winch. The good part also is that they not only look after winch/thomas winches but also other brands.

My preferred solution would be to find some service manuals and do it myself. Of course I am counting on you guys with this one, because I have actually never taken a winch apart and while I love to take things apart, getting them back together is always a challange - for some reason there is always something left over.

I thought I will start a new technical thread once I get back home in the general technical section.

I think my first challenge will be to take the winch off, so that the car still operates. Hmmmm ......

Once everything fails and I (or should I say 'we' ) can't get it back together again, I still can take the parts to Maurice and have it finished.

I just want to do it myself ;-)
