solid rivets

does anyone here know where I can get solid rivits and the setter for them. Like the ones around the door handle on a series and the spare wheel holder on the bonnet plus heaps of other places.

Any link either here or overseas would be appreciated. I know I can use pop rivits but hey they look a bit ordinary.

Brian Hjelm must surely have the tool. I used to have one. I don't think I've used one in nearly 40 years.

If I needed one, I'd make one. They are pretty simple

I'd start with the nearest specialist fastener supplier. If that doesn't work, make enquiries from aircraft workshops at the nearest GA airport as Dave suggests, but their sources are likely to be expensive.

Setting tools are pretty simple, and as Ron says - make them (helps if you have a lathe, but not absolutely necessary). For small scale work with alloy rivets, you don't even need to heat treat them.

Solid rivets from an aircraft parts supplier may not be as expenisive as you think.
I got some off these people - Aviaquip (Home) I think it was about $15 for a quarter of a pound which is a lot of rivets. Just ask for a really low grade i.e. cheap. Mine were 1100 grade alloy, made them nice and soft to put in too.

Any supplier of engineering and/or sheet metal worker's tools should have an appropriate rivet set and die and most good fastener suppliers should have rivets.

i notice you are from caboolture, just pop over to your friendly airport and poke around, someone may have what you need.

actually i also need some rivets for my little folly, and when i get time i will look in my rivet collection, if i don't have any i will be buying them from aviaquip at moorabbin in melbourne,
as wovenrovings suggested, get soft ones, as the ally on landies is soft,
try part no. MS20470A-6-6 this a pure aluminium rivet with a universal head [very unlikly to find MS20435 round head which land rover use] 3/16 inch diameter[ie 6/32nds] 3/8 in long[ie 6/16ths] the A is for the material 1100 soft.
if you want countersunk, MS20426.
and i do have the gear to set them with, both universal and the pommie heads.
no i don't lend, but can assist if suitably encouraged.

was that helpful enough ron?

I'm like you, Harry, I prefer not to lend tools. Had too many damaged and some not returned.

G'day All, I did buy a quantity of solid aluminium rivets round heads 3/16" dia from a company in Sydney some time ago but it went belly up, I still have a supply of various rivets and I have bought larger diameter rivets from the USA, found them in a google search, and as for setting tools I modified my air chisel tools to do the hammer bit and I made the set tool on my lathe but that don't help you.
One thing I can tell you though is you will need 2 other people to help you re-rivet the bonnet anyway good luck with it cheers Dennis
PS Yes RobH I tend to agree that pop rivets look out of place where the round heads should be especially those around fuel fillers etc...
