Cleaning Inside fuel Tank?

Had a bit of spare time today so cleaned up the outside of the fuel tank and treated the rust spots. Took the pickup out and the fuel sender, anyway had a look inside the tank and it has red spots of dirt/rust all through it.i wipes off ( the bits i could get to)

Goolgled fuel tank cleaning and a mix of muriatic acid and water is recommended.
Does anyone have any other suggestions, or should it he handled by the experts in tank cleaning.

if its an unbaffled tank drop a couple of cup fulls of 5mm bluemetal (wash it first) into the tank and the start rolling it around with about a liter of water in it.

What a great idea. I will remember that one

Try this link John. The process was shown on the Cruizin television show and it works a treat. I'm going to use it for my fuel tanks. Check out the whole link as it has heaps of other info.

Interesting, are there Australian suppliers. I can think of a use for that.

Muriatic acid acid is another name for hyrochloric acid, and as discussed on Tommy's thread, it attacks the steel as well as the rust and needs to be neutralised.

About 17 years ago I used a fuel tank repair kit, but I can't remember what it was called; from memory it worked in the same way as the one on Tommy's link. I bought it from an agricultural machinery dealer, but any good motor parts dealer should be able to supply something. The one I bought cost $95. POR Coatings have a kit on their website; their price list from 2005 says $108 for a 100 litre tank,

Molasses and water.

See my webpage: Getting Rid of Rust

Here's my aux tank after half had been treated. Guess which is the rusty bit. The clean bit was just washed and you can see brown staining from fresh rust appearing - it was so clean.

I did the inside as well.

Good link Ron!
I am a molasses-phile myself, but I find where I can't actually hose, or scrub the converted rust, it tends to stick in place (most recently inside my S1 steering column). How do you suggest scrubbing the inside of the tank? I like Dave's idea with the blue metal; I have used coarse sand before now, but not the sort of thing I would want to put in a tank,

Cheers Charlie

I use a hose with a high pressure nozzle where I can't use the pressure cleaner. I guess you don't want sugar in the tank! "D

having forgotten about molasses heres how I reckon it should be done.......
  • count the rocks in 2 cups of 5mm bluemetal
  • dump them into the tank with a couple of liters of sodium bicarbonate and spend half an hour or so rolling the tank around to clean off the scale in the tank
  • tip out the rocks and flush the sodium bicarb out (count the rocks make sure you got them all
  • wire brush the outside to remove grime and scale
  • half fill it with 50/50 molassas and water then paint the outside with it
  • roll occasionally to keep the inside coated
  • check the outside (where the worst rusting was + reapply mollassas) and once thats clean of rust
  • flush the tank with cold water
  • hot flush the tank
Done.

Thats what I call a plethora of solutions,

many thanks

I had thought about the molasses trick, then had a look at the POR site.
But didn;t know about the rocks/blue metal.

The tank is out of the ffr, I had done the outside, it was the inside portion I am concerned about.

Daves suggestion sounds like a good starting point to get it to a level of clean, where I can work out how bad the interior is.

thanks again good tips
