I was taught: Shade; Shine; Silhouette; Shape; Shadow; Sound; Colour; Movement.

Some people argue that shade and shadow are the same thing, but they are not.

Shade is the black look seen underneath, or inside something e.g. the "black" under the wheel arch (so why add to it by painting the chassis black?); the black triangle seen inside a tent with an open flap (or a hootchie left up). I once spotted the enemy camp from about 500metres away with binoculars when I was in the infantry, because the slack sods had left their hootchies up.

Shadow is a projection from an object and is often harder to spot from the ground, by comparison to shade. Dappled shadow, of course, is quite common in woodland and is one reason why Disruptive Pattern Camouflage works so well.

Shade and shiny bits on vehicles, can be removed by covering them with drop down hessian skirts (suitably painted) and sandbags,

Cheers Charlie

6 S's, C & M. It's all coming back to me now. That said, I only learnt at cadets, i've never been a part of the real thing.

G'day Phoeny, from my limited expirience, those lazy spray painters were just doezy diggers mostly, most units did their own painting/touchups etc. generally for inspections or for visiting brass. It was only when the vehicles went in to workshops for major repairs or mods that any proper painting was carried out. Changing from Olive Drab to Cam on the Series 111's was such an occiasion. No-one minded much if the Chassis were black or green as long as they were all the same. When we got our Series 111's (brand new) the chassis were originally black. It didn't matter out in the field as we slapped oily mud over everything and used Hessian skirts to hide the under vehicle shadow.

Cheers Steve.

There was a spammer all over AULRO (mostly REMLR) and he and his posts have been deleted.
