Fuel tank repair/salvage

When I got my IIA registered I could not use the twin army tanks that it came with as they were rusty and leaked. I ended up using a SIII tank which got me through.

I am noticing the lack of range that comes with one 10gallon tank now though and would like to know if it is worth repairing my old tanks. They are original and complete with brass dippers on each side. It's more the inconveniance of carring 3 jerry cans in the back for long trips.

They are in pretty bad shape - will post piccys tomorrow. Alternatively would they be worth something to someone on here? I have no idea

Hi Newbs,

We'll have to see the pics to be able tell I guess.....

If not repairable, cut the tops off to use or sell at some time....

If you still have the cut-over switch and piping, I'd just through in another civy tank for the time being - that'll extend your range a bit. If you don't mind cutting off the tank support cross member, you could also throw in the larger (14 gal ?) tank.

Cheers,

Pete

I will wait for the pics but I had bad rust holes and splits in one that I used for my series 1 project (Shorty) and, after a decent clean, I fixed it with Red Kote. It may be worth doing some research on this stuff as it worked a beauty for me.

The link in my signature block shows a couple of photos of my tank repairs (before and after)... page 3 I think.

a 16 gallon would go well I still have all the changeover piping and valve. I can't really make use of the dippers anymore anyway as I have aftermarket seats installed

(they are comfy though )

My drivers side tank had several holes about the size of match-heads along the front and back edges, just under the saddle. Got full of crud, and rusted away.

I just removes the saddle, cleaned the rust away from the tank, patched it with that fuel tank repair putty, you get from any servo, then gave the inside a go with the redkote. Looks like it did the trick.

I am on to my second tank repair. I used this stuff the first time. It woked when I filled the tank with water to test, but leaked when I filled it with diesel. So I am on to my second tank and I would have spent 50+hrs desoldering and then resoldering.

All my previous repairs have been soldered. Easy to do and should last forever.

Digger - I threw out a bunch of rusty 10-gal tanks with dippers. Didn't know they were rare. Might still have one or two.
