It may not be possible now that you have had the wet-N-dry out, but if there are markings present, then they can often be seen when you view it from an oblique angle in low light. Late afternoon is often good.

If you see any high spots, letter profiles or distinct lines, mark the outlines with some chalk and see if you can then identify what's there when standing back.

You'll still have to wet sand it back later.

On my Mk3 I initially thought I had an inverted triangle, which then appeared as a "V"

Then I thought "The Gerkers" with BUSH and WALSHY on either side.

It turned out to be "THE DERKERS" with two bayonets (or derks) points together and the names "BRASH" and "WALSHY" on either side.

It was obviously an in-service marking as it was on the original deep bronze green colour underneath the olive drab applied whilst the vehicle was still in service.

Now someone has suggested that the truck was probably from the 4th/19th Prince of Wales Light Horse out of Watsonia in Melbourne.

Was interesting when I did it and worthwhile (but I'm not going to do the truck in DBG).

I think you should paint it whatever colour and with whatever markings you want. At the end of the day it is only representational of what the was in service. Nobody can tell you exactly what markings were on a particular vehicle or what they ment unless there by some miracle there is a photo of the vehicle in service. Panels could have been changed so all of a sudden you have lost the original markings. I think the comment above by Zulu Delta about 'unknowing wannabe' should include the clowns that dress up in their army greens at events while displaying their vehicles. Because if you want to be that correct about it all wear the correct uniform etc. that portrays the unit that you are trying to represent with your vehicle. At the end of the day who realy cares. The important thing is that you have saved a piece of history from the scrap heap!!!!!!

While we are on the topic of door markings... When I bought my IIA GS, the PO had fitted doors from a military SIII.

When I was repairing/rubbing the doors back, I found they had "03" stenciled on them in white (both doors) under the top layer of drab. The numerals were large (they took up most of the door bottom). Note this was paint, not chalk. I have not seen any other SIIIs with these markings - any ideas???

That's interesting. The only similar paint markings have seen have been on prototype vehicles. have a look at the perentie project prototype / trials photos.

There as rumor that 2 heavily modified series 3's took part in the trials as well, but to date nothing of them has ever surfaced...

Dif housing markings

I have found a 42 on the rear dif where it is painted white. The letters are nearly as high as the housing. Has any one seen this before and what does it mean.

This is an interesting debate and has some very valid posts on all sides.

Glen is correct when he suggests that a lookalike uniform does not honour the soldiers and veterans being honoured at events like ANZAC Day, Long Tan Day or even Armistice Day. Mix and match "uniforms" with bits from a variety of uniforms from fatigues, through camo to dress uniforms including different countries is even worse.

However, particularly when people are operating vehicles with a potential for significant injuries like tanks and armoured vehicles, you want those vehicles presented and operated in a responsible manner. The last thing you would want would be a bunch of louts, wearing everything from singlets and thongs through to Hawaiian shirts and ending up with whatever you can imagine.

Even some 4WD clubs have a uniform of sorts, as do the Lions Club or Rotary Club branches and then there are the Scouts and Salvation Army.

Reinactors, if that's what they choose to do, should be accurate in their uniforms to the period of the vehicle. But I draw the line and people wearing current service uniforms unless they are current serving members.

So If an organisation has a club policy that members wear particular clothing when presenting their vehicles, be they greens or something else, I applaud their efforts not to appear as a rabble.

Thanks.

They look similar, but I recall the markings on my doors are centralised on the door bottom and slightly larger.

I am pretty sure I didn't remove them, just painted over them, so will rub the doors back and take some pics when I get the chance.
