Axle Roller Bearings

Ok, well i'm replacing the swivel pins of my S3. All good so far. But while the whole front end is sitting in pieces, i thought it best to replace the front axle roller bearings (you know the ones in the swivel housing). Usually i would not touch stuff unless its broke...but with it all apart...seems like a good idea.

However, I am having trouble tracking down the right bearings. It seems the original SKF ones are not made anymore. Does anyone know of the bearing number that is the correct replacement for this type of bearing?

Also i think that this thread may not generally be S3 related, as they are the same bearings on both S2, S2A and S3's. So moderator feel free to move it to the appropriate site if necessary.

Thanks in advanced.

They are the same on the post 80" right to the end of SIII except for the Stage 1 CV models.

There is not a lot of load on those bearings, so if the hardening on the outer race and on the individual rollers is still intact there is no need to replace them. I would check to see if SKF, Timken or NSK bearings are still available in that size, or just not carried.

They are available from people like British Motor Imports, All 4 X Four in Kotara, and Rovercraft but I have found that "Britt part" brand do not show country of manufacture so I suspect that they are Chinese bearings.

Diana

P.S. I'll leave the thread where it is.

Haven't looked recently but they were available from SKF who had them listed by the Landrover model (SKF number may have changed). Mind you, the last I was after Landrover bearings from SKF was swivel bearings - and they were three times the price of the same bearing from Fred Smith!

Having taken apart quiet a few front ends in the past couple of months salvaging parts, i would have to agree Diana, that judging by the fact they are all original bearings, all with little wear marks on they should be left alone!

I found the Hoffmann bearing brand also in one set of swivels i took apart.
