    Which diff oil do you recommended

    Hi,

    Putting my series back together.

    Which diff oil would you use?

    In the good old days when I was mechanic we used Ep 90. Looking in the motor shops there is a whole range on oils.

    Do people use a 90/140?

    this is the one I use for both my landrovers Castrol Manual Gear Oil EPX 80W-90

    I use 80/140 because I think it gives better protection on very hot days,

    90/140 is a bit much, 80/90 is cheaper and more than up to the task.

    any quality diff oil from someone like penrite, nulon, or castrol is fine.

    Look for a GL5 rated lubricant. It has better lubricating properties and will be better for your diffs life.

    GL4 is specified. The extra EP additives in GL5 can supposedly attack phosphor bronze parts like synchro rings and bushes. However I use GL5 and haven't noticed any problems. BUT - if you have a low-mileage gearbox with original bushes it may cause problems.

    80-140 is good in a salisbury in summer as it generates a lot of heat, but too heavy for the rest of the landie.

    Many moons ago I was told Castol VMX was the go.Its major claim to fame was it doesnt smell like gear oil,nothing worse than that gear oil stench!!!!

    This is for the diffs though??? Is it still applicable re the yellow metals?

    VMX is only a 75W-80 GL4 manual trans oil, I wouldn't use it in a diff !

    The rear diff/axle has no bronze parts. The diff usually has bronze bushes in the stub axle etc. However I can't see it being an issue.
