SWB Rebuild and first post

Hi folks
I'm a little way into attempting a 3 week ( we'll see

) rebuild/ refurb on my shorty. It's a 2.25 petrol and is pretty much untouched as far as mods go. It's been in the family for about 8 years and has been my main transport whenever i'm home but recently, its been feeling a bit sorry. I also plan on doing a trip up the coast in it so it's a good excuse to get stuck in. I'll be doing the usual things, suspension, engine, drivetrain etc but, as projects always go, i'll likely be needing some help with the unexpected so any wisdom will be appreciated. I'll attempt to get some photo's up.

She looks great mate. Looks to be in pretty good nick.
I've been studying the wiring and electrics on my SIII for the past couple of weeks so if you have any questions in that department, just let me know. Might be able to help. I've got a workshop manual for SIIIs also, you've probably got one too, but if you don't, just ask away and I'm happy to look anything up for you.

I'm just getting back to it after a decade or two. Mine looked like that once but now it's more like the attached photos except the gear box isn't in it anymore.

Chassis and firewall are galvanised now however!

Sigh!!!

Lakey, you've got a pretty sweet starting point for the rebuild i'd say.

Alright, i've taken a better look at the gearbox and it seems that oil has blown out the selector shafts and also on top of the box. There's a decent covering and it seems pretty fresh too. The photo's will give you a better idea. I was told that it might be due to using the wrong oil, causing frothing, or a blocked breather. On some of longer runs there has been a burnt/bad oil smell come through from under the seat box. Any ideas??

This sort of leakage is quite common on Series gearboxes. Probably just that the O-rings have hardened, possibly the selector shafts are scored by grit. A blocked breather could perhaps cause it, although I have not heard of it. I do not see how foaming oil would cause this leakage unless the O-rings were already failing to seal. The pictures look as if the oil is only coming from the selector shafts, and spreading from there.

John is most likely correct here about the selector shaft seals hardening, wearing and leaking.
Once you thoroughly clean the gearbox down have a look for any witness marks between the gearbox body and the top removable cover section. I have seen reconditioned gearboxes where there were mismatched cases and covers and as the pair are line bored the seals were damaged and so did not seal properly, or were very stiff and binding on the selector shafts. Unlikely but possible.

Don't suppose your vehicle has a paint code on it does it?

I've been trying to identify mine as it's the green colour that briefly followed your I believe but so far have not managed to get a code. If I have yours I can at least exclude it from any searches.

I know I should be able to take a piece to a paint store for matching but our local one recons you can't match car colours and not sure I would trust them to get it right anyway if I can find a code somewhere it will be easier. Someone out there must have an original paint code sticker for a 76-77 SWB! Anyone?

I think you hit the nail on the head - don't use them!

Absolute bollocks. Of course they can match automotive paint... Done it myself numerous times.
