Replacing bearings - drifts wanted

Hello all,
I am renewing the bearings in a hub on my 2a. Has anyone in Sydney made up a pair of drifts that can be used for getting the races in with a press?
If so, could I please borrow them? Please reply here or PM. Much appreciated.

G'day All, If you are replacing the cup n cone, knock out the old ones using a 3/8" dia pin punch, you will only need a short lenght of brass rod 8" long to drift the new ones into place hope that's of some help, cheers Dennis

if your where theres a press and you are replacing them...


belt the old ones out with a center punch then file off the pock marks and on a linisher grinder or preferabley a lathe take about .5mm off of the diameter (dont go over 1mm) then weld a good strong cross piece into the middle of the cone and then weld a decent rod into the middle of that.

cone press made.

your end result should look a little thusishly when viewed edge on

Dinty, with your method do you drift the cones in without worrying about keeping them true, just letting them seat against the inner lip? If so I can do that no probs as I got the old ones out with a hammer and rod
Dave, I thought the cones would be fairly severely case hardened, so skimming on a typical back shed ~7" size lathe would be a difficult task. If my interpretation of Dinty's method is off, I'll ask the bloke with the press and lathe if he can do that, but he's overseas for a few weeks.

the outer shell is easy enough to machine. the hardening is generally only on the inner side of the races as the outerside is ment to be able to hold onto the caseing if in doubt give it a nick with a hacksaw and see what happens.

I did mine on a freshly cleaned up bench grinder by resting the bearing shell on the tool rest of the grinder and rotating the shell backwards at a steadyish 3-4 turns a minute after carefully making sure the rest was square to the wheel and tilted up at the front by a couple of degrees.

as against grinder safety rules I suggest you wear gloves for this particular grind.
