The civilian ones were duck egg blue and AFAIK so were the mil ones when they entered service. What happened in the army was that the engines were sent for reconditioning at contractor companies and the reconditioners painted the engines their standard colour whether it be green, red, blue or black.

2 Bravo mentioned recently that Dupli-Color DE 1618 Detroit Diesel Alpine Green engine enamel is a reasonably close match for the colour used for Brit Army engines. (Particularly if we all start using it )

this is for "HANS" the swb, I figure it will be easier to do the wiring if I pop out the engine and gearbox etc.. (maybe swap gearbox for one in the LWB with an overdrive in it) '

This way I can clean it all up (engine etc and engine bay) and then start doing the putting the loom in properly. so duckegg is the go. (or whatever I find that is close )

The more I look at that paint free one in the "swb with personality" thread the more I think about going that way and then a coat of clear on top!!
I understand theres one up there in qld..(Killer?) anyone have some photos? I d love to see a side on and a back shot....

    cheers

Duck egg blue is a BS Colour so you can get it made up, but I'd just go with the Duplicolor Detroit Alpine Green.

    Hello from Brisbane.

    Don't know for sure.

However, from reading a few UK mags over the years featuring engine and vehicle restoration stories, I am inclined to agree with the 'duck egg blue/green' suggestion.

For what it's worth this is the engine in my S3 SWB which the previous owner was supposed to be restoring to original colours:

I painted mine up and it has just been sitting in the one spot for about 6 months and has managed to get itself all dirty already - so while Diana is on the money with the colour, if I was doing it again I would get a match for Castrol 20W50...

My present one is duck egg blue( possibly a diesel 5 bearing crank) but my 88" had a red block (5 bearing crank).

If you,re not restoring it to original spec go something different.I,ve always like Kawasaki Lime Green

Must say LWB123 your engine bay is very tidy indeed.Gives me something to aim for with the 88" I,m hopefully getting in 2 weeks .

Depends on how many bearings are in the motor....

    Hello again from Brisbane.

I recognise that this is now an old topic, but thought I had better upgrade what I posted earlier on. There I had said that my motor was duck egg blue and this seemed to be the correct colour for a S3 2.25l petrol block.

According to the appendix on the 5 bearing motor in my service and repair manual (Haynes Series 2, 2A and 3) these later motors were differentiated from the earlier 3 bearing model (S2A and S3) by having red painted blocks.

Perdix noted that he had a red block in his post which would have been right.

    Cheers,
