    Six cylinder engine colour!

Was the original colour of the six cylinder engines in the series vehicles duck egg green/blue or something different?
And were all six's the same colour regardless of the series vehicle they were in?

    Cheers, Mick.

    Not sure.

    Hello from Brisbane.

We had a 1972 6 cylinder trayback on the farm for many years from new and my late Dad also had a spare motor in the workshop for a number of years. To be honest, I don't recall either having the Admiralty Grey block (variously called duck egg blue or whatever), but also can't recall if the blocks were black or ochre red (colour of the 5 bearing 2.25 engine).

The block colours for the 4 cylinder models are definitely listed in James Taylor's book on the Series 3 Land Rover and this might also cover the 2.6 litre motors.

Incidentally, I just Googled "land rover 6 cylinder" and found several Youtube videos on tuning or starting "original" or restored 6 cylinder engines and one was black, one was red and another was blue/grey.........

    Cheers,

Duck egg blue is a BS 4800 colour "16C33" see:

BS 4800 Colour Chart and is the original engine colour for both the 4 cyl and 6cyl after SII.

Note the conversion to Australian Standard is sometimes incorrect.

IIRC the forward control 6 cyl were a different colour.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

From memory there is an engine on display at the Gaydon motor museum and it is duck egg blue.

I had a late IIA LWB 6 cylinderSafari wagon. The motor was grey in colour.
    Great machine.

    Blue/grey

    Hello again.

You already pretty much have the correct answer now from the various posts.

For what it's worth I was looking over the Taylor book on Series 3 specs the other night and it states that all the 6 cylinder blocks were Light Admiralty Grey which generally translates to light blue/grey.

The four cylinder 3 bearing motor blocks and heads were the same colour and the 5 bearing motor blocks are an ochre red.

    Cheers,

Very helpful thanks. Very little visible paint left on mine so I was looking for the same information.
I think this job is going to be bigger than I imagined....
