    New Isuzu Owner

    Hi,

Thought I'd come jump into this forum and say hi as it looks like I'll be asking alot of questions

Picked up an Series III Stage 1 today with the 3.9 and 4 speed
talked the po down a bit due to some rust in the foot wells, doors are also shot to the point where it's the outer skin holding them togeather

Chassis A,B,C pillars and rear X member look fine though

What tyres should be fitted to the vehicle it currently has 10R15 which are a real pain without power steering. I was thinking I should look at 235/85/R16

Ok so first problem has arisen

The charge light comes on with ignition and stays on regardless of revs which I assume indicates that it's not charging

theres a volt meter in the cabin that indicates 12.5 volts once the ignition is on that doesn't change with the motor running it jumps to around 14v with the jumper leads connected to the running disco used to start it so I assume the gauge is working.

Having taken a look at the wiring connected to the alternator there is several leads with no insulation where it's worn/cracked away and a couple of dodgy joins

I've included a couple of photos of the alternator, the green tape is where I've covered the dodgy insulation till I can replace it.

I've had a search through the forums but none of the alternator posts come with pictures =) I'm guessing the wires I need to be checking are the 3 wires in the black insulation which are coloured Green/White Black/White and Black.

The other possiblity is that the battery is dead after being left flat for some time if this was the case I would still expect the charging light to go out when driving and the volt indicator to change

Not sure about the charging problem, but the wires that you have put green tape on are negs.
Is this the one from gumtree in the Freo area? Looked ok

    cheers

    yep most likely
needs new doors and a passenger side footwell(its not too bad)
worse case senario is I use it for a transplant but I really don't want to as I've always wanted a series and or an isuzu county.

needs a fair bit of work but I'm keeping the disco as a daily so it should be fun

Sounds like it may need a new voltage reg thats were the black insulated wires with the plug are headed its usualy up on the pass side of the fire wall the stud with the nut were your green wires are conected is the main output after the regulator dose its job and it also controls the dash light

Mine did the same, the Alt was cooked. I got a new one from ebay. There are part numbers in the Part Number sticky thread.

Well hopefully it isn't a dodgy alt and it's a voltage reg

Would this be the culprit you think

Might give these guys a call tomorrow www.ashdown-ingram.com.au anyone know if it's the right mob

Well the fellow in Perth still has a few gave me a current part number of rgx4023

well heres what I've ended up with

same plug and same mounting bracket apparently they are commonly used in holden Gemini, according to the Ingram guys book the 831235 = rgx4023

I haven't tested the old one or the alternator but I was in the area and it only cost me $60 is there any testing I should do on the alt/wiring or can I just plug the new on in and see if it works, don't really want to kill it doing something stupid

well after fitting it the charge light now goes out like it should (the dash volt meter still shows just over 12V with and without the engine running)

but I think i'm now back to the original problem of the battery not holding it's charge

If the cars been running for a little while you can turn turn it off and start it again without issue leave it for a few hours and it'll barely crank over and can't start

Do you have a battery charger? Could just need a good charge.
Need to check the voltage with the motor running with a reliable multimeter.
Nice looking boat you have, where do you keep it?
Looks to have seen quite a stretch of the coastline?
