Question What axels are in the D2?

What axels are used in the Land Rover Discovery 2? Are they the same as any other Land Rover (e.g. a Defender or anything)?

I ask for the purposes of http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread...79#post1855479

Not used in anything else unfortunately. (unless you can argue the Bowler Wildcat as an option...)

The housing is similar if not same as others but the ends are different. The D2 had open knuckles as opposed to the swivel balls. These are rotary friction welded the same as the flanges for the stub axles (rear) and the swivel balls (front).

No swivel balls on the D2. It has an open King Pin setup.

Spoke to the local engineer this afternoon. Took the RRC and a D2 housing.

As far as he's concerned, the housings are identical, save for the swivel flange/knuckle attachments. Given that these are fitted by the same method (rotary friction weld), he had no concerns about the strength factor of the housing.

Front: Stuff post swivel mechanism, he's ok with the D2 ally swivel assy by comparison to the RRC swivel ball. Radius/Panhard attachments are structurally the same as far as he's concerned.

Rear: As front, not an issue. A-frame vs watts link, only concern was the watts link seemed a little light for the application.

Axles (as per question in other thread): I do know what a fully floating axle is THANK YOU!. But having worked on these things for 25+ years I may have picked that up along the way (They seem to have been fitted to all rovers save for D2's and S1's). As I may have stated, and he reiterated they are not a load bearing part of the structure. Break one and nothing falls apart. Yes a bigger wheel may break it easier but that’s your issue. He's not changing it.

If you really believe there is no load applied through the axle, try removing one and going for a drive..

    post the result....

Also what is "D2 ally swivel assy"

The notion that the D2 housing is basically identical to the Disco1 type housing is ridiculous.

The hub won't stay on without the axle... Which is why there is a big nut on the end of the half shaft.
