What a year 2013, trouble till the last

That will teach me to look a bit harder, I was having some quality time this New Years eve afternoon with a 300TDi D1, fitting a second hand R380 after doing the clutch.

Everything was going well until I had the last 8 mm of gap between the flywheel housing and the gearbox housing.

It wouldn't go any further!!!! Why ??? , Now I will let you tell me what I found and how I should sort it.

    Clue, there were four.

Dowels between the engine and the gearbox. Two got stuck in the replacement gearbox and two remained in the block.

Bin there, done that, not in a 300 tdi though.

Got no idea Arthur but hope you have a better 2014 . Had to many drinks watching the sun go down over Ayres Rock to get my brain into fixing stuff.

    All the best

    Cheers Ean & Louise

What a great pic, think it was 44 when we arrived and at 10.50pm the disco tells me it 37. Great temps for having a cold beverage.

Can't help with getting the dowels out unless you can fit a grinder in there .

    Cheers.

    Rock an Dowels

That photo caught my eye on Google Images, I dare say it's not Photoshopped either.

The plan for removing the extra dowels, involves first moving the gearbox back about 50 mm, on a couple of long bolts inserted in the holes used for fixing the two halves together.

The gearbox bell housing has the holes going right through the flange for the solid type dowels, so its a easy way to use a drift to knock them through and then to stop the loose dowels flying into the clutch mechanism causing more grief, I will hold the dowel to be removed with a small set of Mole Grips ( locking jaw pliers ) and tie the handle with some string to the outside of the bell housing, so they don't end up themselves inside the bell housing.

Well, that's the plan, so Happy New Year everyone, where nothing horrible is going to happen! I can wish.

I might try that first with the vice grips / mole grips on the dowels in the flywheel housing first, as according to spare parts manual, the dowels are normally fitted into the bell housing.
