406 and let it set overnight.
Hi all,
Which type of Loctite is preferred for plastic?
401 or 406
http://www.loctite.sg/sea/content_da...NEWCA401EN.pdf
http://www.sjgogo.com/pdf/406-en.pdf
401 says it is for wood, paper, leather & fabric.
406 says it is for plastics and rubbers.
Sounds straight forward but if you look at the two pdfs it looks like the 401 has a higher bond strength than 406 when used for plastic. The results are skewed as 406 lists the results after 24 hours of curing and the 401 after 72 hours.
Threads on here recommend 401 for plastic.
I have had a bottle before but threw it out when I moved about 7 months ago as it was getting less viscous. It was kept in the fridge and was about 2 years old. Was only half used. A little goes a very long way.
I can't remember for sure which one it was but it glued most plastics well but some not at all. It also glued crockery/china very well.
So which is the best one for plastic?
I'm talking Disco1 dash plastics, tail light lenses and whatever my kid's travel cot is made of if you know those ones where you pull up the bottom centre and click the sides to fold it up. Probably an ABS plastic I think.
406 and let it set overnight.
From my Loctite catalogue it says
410
Porous substrates such as wood and card and general purpose bonding of plastics and rubber.
406
EPDM, rubber, plastics.
So that says to me that 406 is specific for rubber and plastics.
Use 770 Primer with the above two if trying to bond difficult plastics like Santoprene, polyolefin plastics, etc.
If there is a gap greater than 0.1mm use 454 (gel)
480 is used for bonding metal to metal and rubber and where a high peel strength is required.
416 is for slower fixture speeds for rough, irregular surfaces.
You'll need their respective PDS's for bond strengths.
Got some 406. First job was gluing the driver's door pocket back on in my Disco1. The passenger side one is still going strong after about 2 years and gluing it on with whatever Loctite glue I bought last time.
I managed to glue my finger to the door pocket. Geez it was painful to pull it off Bloody good stuff.
go the 406 and deal with the setup time.

Hi all,
Would you use 406 to glue down a badly peeling dash ?
The vinyl foam on my D1 has lifted from top to bottom.
I am going to remove the whole dash tomorrow and start re-glueing it
Cheers
Andrew
