    D1 ABS diagnostics..

    Hi All,

Had an ABS light up for a while on a 1997 Disco. Does it need a special reader to tell me what's wrong ? or more importantly is there someone in Melbourne that might be able to read the code for me ?

Believe it to be one of the sensors as I took them all out and reseated them a few months ago and the alarm went .... Now it's back but I'd rather go to the exact wheel not play a game of luck. Also is there a way to test a sensor ?

    Thanks

    Darren

Hi, you can plip test it, see attachment, disregard the V8 thing cos the ABS is the same regardless of engine type

    Great information.

"Straight to the pool room" or perhaps to The Good Oil?

    All fixed,

Thanks to sierrafery for the PDF.

Just some pointers for those following the instructions.

The relay for mine (1997 manual) is under glove box it's a green one. You need to remove the black cardboard panel and then the nut to drop down the metal housing which contains a bunch of relays.

The DLC connector (OBD connector) is upside down to that shown in the document.

To check the sensors find a straight bit of dirt road and hammer the brakes, the wheel with the faulty one will lock up leaving a skid mark, the fronts go first normally because the leads twists when you steer breaking them. Pat

So simple. So often we go looking for the complicated solution when a simple one is staring us in the face.

If there is a problem with ABS on a Disco 1, locking up the brakes on a dirt road and looking for the faulty one won't work as if the ABS is faulty, the whole ABS goes down - i.e. none of the ABS works, you default back to the standard brakes. Use the blink test as first said - quite simple.
