I wonder what they mean by mini, scaled down or just a lower tech version ?
I always thought this may happen in one way or another, it makes sense.

I'd read some time ago that the locally (Indian) built Freelanders were more expensive to build than the UK built ones due to Indian red tape.

With an Eastern European plant being established for (new) Defender production, I can't see how setting up another production line in India would make economic sense. It's interesting that the story has only come from the Indian press.

It's not uncommon to ship the entire production line to India and keep producing the item - Cummins, amongst others do this. Once an engine is superseded for the on highway market, the previous models production is continued in India for many years afterwards. There are several engine being made there with the original production equipment still. I can't see why they couldn't do the same thing with a vehicles production line.

I'm pretty sure that Holdens were exported complete with maybe some finishing done locally like adding chev badges, i did see a couple of HD and HR holdens in Zimbabwe and an XA/B Falcon ute that was rebadged as a Ranchero.

Just Google Image Indian taxis and you will see the past brought back to life, even more so than with London taxis.
