Hi all,

I've just bought myself a new trekking stove. Unfortunately these are not very practical on 4wdriving trips and more at home on Mt Everest.

As an aside...

I'm currently in the process of restoring an old Turley and Williams 'British Safety Stove'. It is in a state of total disrepair and the tank and burner unit are so far gone that I won't be bothering to replace them. So I've decided to use the casing as a base for the new trekking burner when 4wdriving and simply remove the burner and take it separately when trekking. Best of both worlds.

Today I gutted the British Safety stove, removing the burner, vaporiser, tank, pump and cooking grate, removed the lid and wind shields and used a wire brush in an electric drill to strip the majority of the paint/surface corrosion. Then I used paint stripper and medium grade sandpaper to remove the last remnants of paint. Little bit more to do tomorrow, but essentially the whole unit is almost back to bare metal.

This time tomorrow the entire thing should have been entirely stripped and the completely sanded down to P1200.

The casing itself is aluminium and I want to know how to go about applying paint to it. What sort of primer needs to go on first? What brands/types are recommended, something that will also prevent corrosion?

I want the top colour coat to be fairly hard, resistant to light scratching etc, so what would be the go? Preferably aerosol, my compressor is a POFS.
