I would use a small section hopleys truss - cheap & strong
(see your local friendly tame steel merchant)

Nothing to do with landrovers ...I have been pulling my hair out for hours trying to find the minium I beem I can use to span 8.8 meters no or minimul deflection at centre with a load of hav'nt a clue but its a floor in the shed but its only going to be light storage up there with a form ply floor
better add this bit supported at the ends only dont want any posts in the middle of the shed
any thoughts ....
Ok Abit more info the load would be about 4.0kN/m2 or 100lbs per square foot that according to the interweb would be about avarge for a office/light storage area.

How wide is the floor in the other (transverse) direction?
Will there be more than one of these beams spaced along the other direction of the floor?
Will people be walking on the floor?
Beams like described fail by buckling with the top flange (which is in compression) bending to the side and down. Adding lateral restraints to resist the sideways movement of the top flange will dramatically reduce the required section size. You will most likely need members to support the flooring in the transverse direction that can serve as lateral restraints.
You won't get no deflection - the code sets allowable deflection.
I think a quick sketch of what you are trying to do might help.
and are you using wood or steel for the shed extension?
Steve
OK help I have done a u bute little drawing but how do I get it in a post..I have tried to upload it to web shots but its a word file and webshots wont accept it me being a compleat neanderthol with computers I thought I was doing well with the drawing

Tony you could go in to the document click "save as" and save it as a PDF.
then come back in here post a reply and click manage attachments (half way down) and load the PDF straight to your post as an attachment.
failing that a screen shot and save as a Jpeg..
Or failing that again send your drawing to me and I will get it up for you
