    Catching Banana prawn pics

    Gday All,
At the request of Pedro, here are some pics of catching some Banana prawns, because they school they can be caught in large quantities quickly. They can be spotted by plane or by eye looking for mud when they boil or school..We use a dual frequency sounder to determine the fish from prawns..prawns generally only show on the high freq..

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us
This pic is after the nets have dragged the school and we are bringing them onboard, there is 1 codend or bag per side.the metal frame in the net is the turtle excluder

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us
The net will either be emptied onto the sorting tray or straight into the cold water holding tanks, this depends on how much we have already caught or how much competition I have for the school

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us
The yellow/brown in the codend is all banana prawns, this one is going into a holding tank, these hold 2500kgs each we have 2.

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us
This tank is full of clean prawn already sorted from any fish, we now wait till the blast freezer is ready.this will freeze 3000kgs to minus 18 in 14hrs.

This is something you never want to see, someone not doing their job properly.A very expensive mistake.

Thats a insight into the world of Banana prawn fishing, obviously the stresssfull days of not catching cant be photographed.

PS I saved all the Rum,Sodomy and lashing photo's for private viewing

    Greay Pics!

So is the by-catch less with bananas than with other species?

    Gday Ben,
Yep it is as the nets are generally on the bottom for a much shorter time and you target the school only. The turtle excluders have a bar spacing of 100mm so they also exclude, sharks rays, large fish etc.

When we fish for tiger prawns we generally drag the bottom for say 3hours, a normal shot chasing Banana prawns is about 20mins..

The picture of the sounder shows a heavier concentration on the top (high freq) the light blue on the bottom(low freq) will be the small fish you see in the net..

The major problem with our fishery is we are limited onwhat by-catch we can have on-board regardless wether its perfectly good fish, and its dead, if we have our limit on the boat, it all goes back over the side...
( this is a federal Gov rule, not 1 we put in ourselves)
