non Landy question. for the Ford experts please

I managed to pick up a EL 4.0 lite long motorto put into my wifes EF.
The EF is coil pack and the EL is dissy.
The question is can I use the EL timing cover? - The Ef has a sensor for the harmonic balancer, so I need to swap the balancers, The EL has the casting for the sensor but is not threaded, so I should be able to tap it to suit.
The EF has a metal plate that protects the routing of the sensor wire, I presume this is just blot/clamp on?
I still have the EF engine in the car, I'm resealing and gasketing the EL motor and want to do a in and out change over. The timing cover issue is holding me back on reinstalling sump etc. The wrecker said to me I needed to change the covers, but if it's only a tapping for the sensor then I could proceed and use the existing EL one

Can't say for sure but from what you say, I reckon that it would work.

Dave.

Seriously just strip the new motor back to block and head
Fit Everything from the old motor

Better to use the parts that it came
with they go back just as easy as they came out

That would be a pain to tap out the timing cover and a big ****ifff if it cracks
They are very brittle dropping it on the ground can break them

I agree with steve_35, It might be best to transfer the harmonic balancer, coil pack, timing cover etc from the ef motor onto the el motor.(ie. downgrade your new EL motor to an EF motor)
the block, head etc are identical so transferring all these components shouldnt be a problem.
if you would like to stick with the el/dizzy config you might have to change computers and possibly part of the harness as well, this might end up in a headache.
I was suprised when I upgraded from my ef to my el to notice they had gone back to the dizzy config, apparently the coil pack had issues but cant say I had any probs with mine(although I do prefer the dizzy, some may argue this)
also if you are pulling the engine out of the car id recommend replacing both the rear end seal + spiggot bearing as well.. best to do it now while its is easily accessable.
if you run into any difficulties pm me I might be able to help.

Cheers,
Jarrod

You must swap over to the EF ignition system, the engine harnesses as looms are very different and would require a complete swap + ECU swap. Also I'd recommend replacing the head gasket on the EL motor using a GENUINE au MLS head gasket and also GENUINE head bolts. The other gaskets don't need to be ford, but they do make the best I6 head gasket.

The Harmonic balancer must be changed as the EF ones have a sensor plate with cut outs that the sensor picks up from. The EL harmonic balancer does not as they use a Dizzy.
Timing is electronically controlled on the EFs and is not adjustable.

I'm not trying to upgrade to an EL.
I have bought the EL motor and have already changed gaskets seals and rear end seal. and will bolt on all the ef ancillaries once I pull the old motor out I am using my coil pack ingnition from the EF.
I was just asking about the timing cover as that was holding up putting the sump back on.
Everything else is under control.

Thats cool just make sure the marks are the same or you will never be able to time it

I have done the same deal took me a week till i called a mechanic and we had to remove the entire front of the motor to remove the balancer and remark the new one as it was way out

i just assumed they were a mass produced item all identical but apparently not
