Question Could it be a Slipped Liner? I hope not!

Well at least its not on my Disco I have an 84 Rover SD1 with a Rover 3.9 V8 and single turbocharger. The car hasnt been going for a few years and has been sitting under the carport.Over the past few months i have been slowly getting it ready to do some club racing. My problem is the noise that it is making
The motor i bought a few years ago brand new(bottom end) and reco heads.Hasnt done more then 40.000k's.Its a high comp bottom end if that makes any difference. It use to be my every day car and never missed a beat or made a noise. The motor was very quiet and smooth. Now on start up it sounds like a tappet noise. But slowly goes away.I took it for a drive and the noise was really bad.It sounds like one really bad tappet sound.I think it is coming from the left bank at the back.
It doesnt lose any fluid and still has good power.Just really noisy. You can hear it on youtube under turbo rover.Because it hasnt been started in a few years could it have some crap blocking the oil galleries.I did change the oil before i started it.I spoke to a oil specialist and he said to put 1 litre of deisel in and run it for a few minutes to clear the oil galleries. Is this a good idea? Then dump the oil and replace.
    Any ideas would be great.

    Thanks

    Chris

sounds like a lifter problem to me as its been sitting for a while .
Hows the oil pressure if its ok id pull off the rocker cover on the noisy side and check that the push rods are getting oil up them from the squirt of the lifter and check that all the push rods are tight as one of your lifters may be sticking

Chris, I would say yes most possibly a sticky lifter. I would be interested to see if holden lifters were used, as this isn't at all uncommon.
As regards the diesel option, only do this for about 30 minutes, and avoid driving the vehicle, just idle it and use no more than 500ml.
(Edit, just watched Vid, definately sounds like cam followers to me.)

In my limited experience of loose liners is that they are noisier when hot.. then they sound like death rattles. A stuck lifter is likely. Apart with dealing with oil flushing/replacing, a new set of lifters is easy to do. However try lifting the rocker covers and spin the pushrods at each cylinder's TDC. You may have a bent pushrod from revving a pumped up lifter. I pulled 3 bent pushrods out of a boyo's 4.2litre stroker Range Rover engine the other day.

Thanks guys i will give these things a try on the weekend.Hoping it is just something simple like a lifter problem. You can hear the sound on the clip. And as you can see it will be a pain in the ass to take the rocker covers off. Although i have cleaned the rest of the engine bay up

Sure is loud! (the noise that is) Reminds me of an engine I once had with too much compression, tin head gaskets, LPG. The (teflon) valve stem seals leaked badly and the pistons used to hit the heads with the carbon build up and the thin gaskets. When the engine warmed up it expanded and got quieter.
Could your carbon build up have fallen off over the years and wedged on to the piston crown? I suggest pulling the plugs and looking for oil fouling. Perhaps use a bore scope.I think I ended up stripping off the heads and redoing them and fitted thicker gaskets.

I have to get the exhaust done When the Rover gearbox decided it didnt want to change gears anymore i put a Supra 5spd in.And to get it in i had to cut a few inches off the exhaust.I just havent bothered to get a new bit welded in yet.
