Just spat the water pump on a 130 TD5

The next door neighbour just spat the water pump, on his 130 TD5 (at 321.000 Ks) ; the whole shaft assembly has come clean out . Looks like a Timing case off and repair .
How is it done ? Do you need to replace the whole case including pump . or re-install a new pump into the original xase.
Where does one get the right parts at the right price . ??

I'm not clued up on the Diesels ... But are you saying you lost the Idler bearing assembly to the Serp belt that drives the water pump ... and this requires a full strip of the head ++++ .... to get to it???

Any chance of some pics before you get to involved in striping parts?
The bearing can be changed with out removing the timing case if all is good.

Only in a Land Rover

Water pump on the TD5 is driven off the rear of the power stering pump.
The cooling fan is only mounted on a bearing mounted in the timing case.

The case could be removed without removing the head after the sump is droped, one stud is the hold up so tounge held the right way and one can have luck on their side.

Upon further closer inspection , I reckon I can get the outer shells out , fit a new bearing assembly to the shaft and re-install the whole lot , because the Circlip/groove is still in good condition .
Now all that looks like needs replacing is the Double row deep groove bearing (or is it two singles back to back ?) Anyone got a bearing number ? and a new circlip wouldnt go astray !!!

......that you should do a "search" about TD5 head gaskets ... Age verses K's (at 321.000 Ks) ..... and consider if it's a good time to change it, since your already halfway there

I know, I Knpw SFA about the TD5 , but I find it hard to believe that a head gasket actually wears out ! What is this situation that gives a Head gasket a definitive life ?
Given the engine is operated within its designed operating parameters , with right fuel . oil , coolant, and clean air , I wonder what causes this failure ?

I don't think it's "the head gasket wears out" ....

Ali? heads "expand and shrink" and are held down by "steel bolts" ..... Have a search on ....TD5 head gaskets....
