    County Indicators

My indicators have decided to only work when they feel like it (88 County). Where should I start my search for the problem?
Is the flasher located in with the fuses? The switch seems tight and good, but could it have bad contacts?
Will the hazzard switch have any influence on the problem? So far all I know is that hitting the steering column doesn't fix it
I plan to wriggle connections tonight and poke things with the multimetre.

    Cheers

I'm no electronics guru, but generally I've found that most of these sorts of issues can be caused by a bad earth. I always start there. As it's all of your indicators, I'd start with the flasher unit. The power runs through more than fuse (left & right as I recall), so check all of the connections at the relay.

Also the indicator switches weren't the best, so have a look and see if it's worn, burnt or dirty.

Once when my indicators decided to only work when they were in a good mood, I noticed that I could kick start them by turning on the hazard lights for a couple of seconds. They usually worked after that.

Just went to try that. Hazzards don't work either so no jump start.

Next step (after checking connections, fuses, etc) might be to swap in a spare flasher unit if you can find one. No idea what they cost new, but someone might have a spare kicking around.

IIRC the flasher is in behind the fuse box panel.

Do they come on at all? ie you turn the stick and they stay on but don't flash?

or do they simply refuse to come on?

Check fuses first, and remember that the fuse may look OK but not be working due all the crap that goes wrong with glass fuses.....

Just to eloborate - you have to remove the plate -2 screws- off the firewall. Its the plate that holds the fuse cover.
Normally the stalk is sloppy & wont stay on before they fail, so it is probably the flash can.

I didn't get a chance to look at it last night. However I do have new oil in the diffs and transfercase. The fuse did look OK, but you are right about the glass fuses. The other things on that fuse (gauges) still work.

When you flick the stalk, the lights don't come on at all.

Yep, 2nd that (or 3rd that or whatever).

You can try tapping the flasher unit with the end of a screwdriver or something while the indicator switch is on. Sometimes they'll work (tick) in-time with the tapping. If it does then at least you'll know for sure that the flasher unit is failing/has failed. Also a good hard tap can sometimes get them working again! (I've had flasher units work for months after giving them a good hard tap!)

There might also be poor connections between the wires and flasher unit (this has been a problem with my County). To fix this i pulled each of the wires (4 of them in my truck) out of the black plastic connection thingo, cleaned the terminals up and tested them by connecting them back to the flasher unit without the plastic connection. By doing this you'll be able to see if any of the individual terminals are loose, as this might not be appararent when looking at the terminals in the plastic connector.

Unfortunately, the indicators started working again on teh way home yesterday. I pulled the metal fuse panel off, but it's hard chasing an electrical fault when everything is working.

I gave the flasher a few taps, and wiggled the connection, but it didn't stop working again, so I guess I'll have to wait until it dies again. The flasher is a hella unit, clear blue plastic casing.
