EP 90 Gear Oil for Transmission Gearbox

Do the oil companies still make it and if so which is the best make?

Any Idea where I can get some in Perth?

Everyone seems to want to sell me SAE 80 not 90.

    SAE 90 Gear Oil

Any idea where I can get some in Perth or which company makes it?

Everyone seems to want to sell me SAE 80 not 90 but I have been told that the 90 makes for a more quiet gearbox.

I don't think you would notice the difference. Why not run 80w/90?

Personally I use Penrite Mild EP which is safe for the phosphor-bronze bushes in the Land Rover gearboxes. (and Command Recon swivels if you have one)

Unfortunately, the powers that be in Penrite no longer supply the oil in anything other than 1 litre bottles.

Still rather than changing brands for all my vehicles I suffer small bottles.

Do a search for the answer first; then make a decision where you want the thread and post it there.

Do not clog up the system with duplicate threads - no one will know where they are.

Thanks for your answers so far.

I have just found a product from Nulon which is a SAE 90 Limited Slip Differential Oil.

Will this be ok in a series 3 Transfer box?

    Pete,

Most oil companies can supply an 80W90 gear oil. Means it'll be a bit thinner on startup and will thicken to 90 when it warms up. You will need to check with their technical helpline to ensure that it is suitable for use in older gearboxes that have bronze bushes.
I'm using 80W90 in my Series 1 (gearbox, transfer & Axles) and my Defender (transfer and axles).
I sourced Mobil (from K Mart), Shell (from Autobarn some years ago) and after shopping around now use Tru Blu Oils (they are a blender rather than a manufacturer of oil) which I buy direct from the factory for approx $13plus GST for 5 litres.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Colin

Thanks for your detailed explanation. I have gone for the SAE 90 from Nulon after talking the their technical guy.

It's fine for the Transfer box but not for the gearbox. Not as good a price as yours though.

    $38.00 for 4 lts.

    Regards
    Pete
