    BOSCH ALTERNATOR TO TDI 300

Been searching the site and reading the posts on by those that have fitted a bosch alt to a 300tdi but no one has mentioned a model number or what vehicle it came off that is closest to the tdi's mounting position.

Basically, there isn't one. Link to Bosch pdf catalogue >> http://www.bosch.com.au/content/lang...tarter_WEB.pdf

However, that doesnt stop one from modifying....

Models such as the 120A BXU12121A ag spec unit may well be workable.

Have a look at what is used in the Magna. A couple of years ago (6ish) a fellow 300 TDi defender driver had his alt replaced by his auto elec with one that was suited to a magna. Had to recycle the ribbed pulley and play with the alignment of same as I think he may have had to pack the pulley out with a whasher or take some metal off the pulley to allow it be used.

I keep seeing the Magna one referenced over the years but I went through the Bosch catalogue with a pretty cluey old Auto and marine leccy once and he reckoned all the mountings were totally unsuitable compared to the MM/Lucas/Land Rover/Mondeo/Transit/Fiat Agri/New Holland type.
They swung off the wrong side, the foot to foot dimension was wrong, it wouldn't be easy.
He reckoned the time wasted to try and make a Bosch one fit you'd be better off fitting the one that actually fits straight up.

The last time I talked to OEX about some auto air bits (my usual supplier didn't have what I wanted) I asked about an MXA 828
This is a Ford Transit alternator that bolts straight in, the
    MM # is A127IR-100A-14V
    Ford # is 63341345
At the time is was $285 (trade) + GST

    If someone can match up a Bosch one, here are the critical dimensions for the Land Rover alternator;

    pivot and adjustable hole 8.2mm
Adj. hole to pivot hole 148mm
    length foot to foot 80mm
    Mounting type J180/twin leg
pulley diam. 53mm, 7 grooves (that at least can be swapped easily)
    shaft diameter 17mm

I know there isnt a direct bosch bolt in and i always thought the magna one was for a V8 swap, i seek Hook made some brackets to fit one.
So if i can i get an alt with the bottom legs at least close to mounts i can adjust brackets to suit, will also check the price of the MXA 828 and A127.

Can't recall re the brushes, but the front bearing in a Defender one (65amp) is an off the shelf bearing (can't recall the size, swapped it out about 20,000km ago) and the needle roller in the rear can be re-packed if it hasn't been totally fubared, mine has been re-packed three times now, the last time I used Redline CV2 grease, which is basically a no-melt race car CV/tripot grease, but the worst part with the little sucker is that it's unsealed.
The Disco one at least has a replaceable rear bearing, and i think my old auto leccy said you could get bits, hell, he used to get a mate to make brushes for things like quads which were complete replacement on starters. ie no spares available.

I'm guessing my alternator isn't original, can't recall why I thought that now but I've had the vehicle since 76,000km and it's clocked over 260,000km.

I met a bloke up north who fitted a BMW 120amp to his Tdi so he could weld but like Rick said it's easier just to get one that bolts straight on like the transit. Pat

Generally, they have a particular pattern being the mount set. A127 is the pattern for a V8, no idea what the diesels are, but for example, my RRC now has fitted a 120A Iskra A127 pattern thats actually for a Massey Ferguson tractor.
The only difference was a slight mod to allow pulley to fit (took all of about 30 seconds to do), and the connections on the back are at 3PM as opposed to 12PM on the original, leaving them a little close to the rocker cover (about 6mm clearance ) but can be altered by using a bigger belt and adjusting out.

Important thing is to find the pattern. I would contact PJL Diesel Electric in either Dandenong or here in Perth. I use and have used them here for many years and what they dont know in electrical gear for diesels ain't worth knowing.
