    Prop shaft length

    Hi All

Am about a third of a way through a ground up rebuild on a series 3 109 Landy.

I have used the best of two vehicles, both series 3 109. (year 1974 and 1976)

Have rebuilt the prop shafts and found the rear shaft to be too long.

Appears about 20mm too long so I cant get it in place to bolt up.

Are prop shafts different lengths due to engine or cylinder type i.e. diesel or 4 or 6 cylinder?

    The front fits as normal!

    Thanks in advance.

I thought the 6cyl's gearbox was mounted further rearward.
    Cheers

For the Series 3 109, the difference in prop shafts is only between the four and the six (six has gearbox further back) (and Stage 1 is different again). However, note that the Rover and Salisbury rear axles on the 109 call for different prop shaft lengths. Now all S3 had Salisbury diffs when they left the factory - but that does not mean that one you are using as a donor did!

There is the possibility that with a different engine fitted, the gearbox has been moved, but that would change the front shaft as well.

Check that your rear axle is correctly located (under the spring stops) although it is difficult to see how it could not be.

You can identify the six by the bulkhead and floor panels. Probably the easiest to describe is to look at the transmission tunnel panel that the gear lever comes through. On the four, the hole for the lever is close to the front of the panel, where in the six, it is near the centre of the (shorter) panel.

    Thanks for the reply.

The rear diff housing is located ok as I loosened the u bolts and checked I couldnt push it back anymore. But it needs about 20mm or so.

Next step might be to get a pretty reliable measurement of a 4 and 6 cylinder rear prop shaft length.
In the morning I will check which Engine came it came out with.

I think it may have been the diesel.

So the 6 cylinder prop shaft must be shorter?
