Pretty much an old wives tale, the boffins in white coats make sure an oil is neutral to seals before it's released.
Most lubes these days are so mixed up in their chemistry anyway no one really knows where a mineral oil ends and a syn begins.
Hi Guys
I use penrite everywhere i can, defender disco and boat.. in the diffs but not in the gbox... have no issues..
i have the chance to use fully synthetic mobil instead of the hpr deisel 5 but i seem to remember that changing can cause seals to swell / harden / fail etc etc...
what are the thoughts on this? is it true? or just old wives tales...
Thanks
Steve

Stick with the HPR Diesel 5
Giving excellent results in the TD5s according to a 'source' I spoke with
And saves quite a bit of $$$$$$$$
Thanks Rick... appreciate the info...
Mike... the problem is that i have access to the penrite hpr and the mobil fully sythetic at more or less the same priceso money isnt saved... but i dont know if i would gain anything either!
Steve
Worn cam lobes. Is this the case with all brands of synthetics?
If so, guess I better change over sooner rather than later.
Have had my TD5 on 0w-40 since 20k, with 118k on her now.
I shouldn't read this stuff, really.![]()
No.
IIRC the one JC saw used M1 5W-30.
It could have been a metalurgy issue, but more than likely a lack of EP additives in the lower viscosity M1's, particularly if it was a ILSAC GF-4 spec oil, which is more concerned with drag reduction within the oil and low phosphorous levels to minimise cat contamination.
OW-40 M1 should be fine, it's tailored to Euro engine specs. including light diesels, not US engines.
If you want to run a Mobil syn oil in a Land Rover diesel I'd use Delvac 1, but AFAIK there's nothing wrong with Penrite and the last time I spoke to someone that really knew oils from lots and lots of oil testing in a lot of different engines there's a lot right with it![]()
It's actually Castrol 0w-40 I use. Meets all the specs you mentioned.
Cheers for the detailed explanation.
Thanks Rick
It was the devlac i have the chance of getting... but to be honest i doubt its worth the change... its not costing any more... and the penrite is at my doorstep..
Would there be any advantages for towing as the engine is under more load?
Thanks for the other replies too guys...
