    overheated 300tdi plus question on plug

    I do know that a lot has been said on 300TDI's overheating. Read in one thread that one should get rid of the plastic plugs on top of the radiator and replace them with brass plugs. decided while going up to Southport yeasterday I would do it that night--last night that is, by swapping the plastic ones onto the disco that I am selling, and swaping the brass ones from the one for sale onto our new 1995 silver disco [2 1/2 inch lift and detroit locker, brand new head and injectors, etc.]. But on the way home the plastic plug blew out and I saw RED, that is saw the needle in the red on the temperature gauge. Thought No we have warped the new head.

    Spent 4 1/2 hours hitching home to get brass plug and back to the car, less than 40 kilometers, put brass plug in, filled with water and drove home, 1000 verticle foot climb over the distance--no overheating , but an upset freezing wife who waited with the car while I hitched home and back to her.

    So guys do change your plastic plugs for brass ones.

    Now guys for my question.

    The 2 brass plugs we purchased today, 2 for only $ 4.45, are hollow on the bottom, solid hex head, and are longer by about 6 mm than the standard plugs meaning they will have a trapped air bubble. I understood that the system was sealled with no air bubble, but do not think this air bubble will be a problem. Am I right in assuming an air-bubble in the plug of both the radiator and the thermostat housing will not be a problem??? Am I right that the longer thread will not be a problem???

    The plastic plugs that you removed were shaped similarly to the brass replacements. I do not believe that the little air trapped within the plug could be an issue. Has not been for my brass plugs for the last 8 years or so.

    Yep agree with that 5 years and I have not had an issue. Also have a low water switch fitted and that has never activated with air aroundthe sensor so all should be fine.
