has it been eny more tappy?? seen a few very high k td5s and non had ware like that, not sumthen simple like lose of oil press to the top end?? or blocked oil gallerys in the head,
Hey All,
Bit of an odd one here.
2003 D2a TD5 Manual. 215k km.
Was seemingly perfect when bought.
About 2 months later, it started to smoke badly when cold, but mainly cleared up when warm. It still smelt a bit fuely.
When cold it also had a miss, which is noticeasble if you try and hold a steady revs, say 1500+. You can feel it miss.
Anyway I finally had the chance to take a few bits off this evening to have a look.
(A specialist had made a comment that he thought it was an issue with no2 cylinder) - I checked the cylinder balances and it was showing some slightly odd readings... anyway... pics.
Rocker cover off,
Bad lobe wear on the injector fuel pump lobes and rockers. Worst on cylinder 2 where there is what seems to be some sort of impact damage.
All however have damage:
Mismatched injector:
Any thoughts on what could cause this?
Poorly set bump clearances on the injectors?
What other damage am I likely to find? Seriously hoping there is no cam journal damage in the head.
Anyone seen anything like this before?
We did a full service after it was purchased including removing the sump and no evidence of any damage was seen in the sump.
Rgds
Peter.

Hi Stig,
I dont think so regarding the oil pressure as there is no apparent damage on anything apart from the lobes and rollers for the injector fuel pumps.
All the other lobes are still smooth and shiny.
As for noise, not that I had noticed.
Cheers
Didn't Tombie warn about Mobil 1 doing this??
Cheers

Pete,
That is a similar wear to others I have seen with LR's 20,000km service interval and / or poor quality/ incorrect oils. ALSO, some early cams had poor hardening, you may find the cam date of manufacture is 2000 or similar. That mismatched injector is the right one, all the others are black tops which are incorrect for MY2003.

A question for those in the know...
Is it possible the later injectors and rockers have been fitted?
I understand the later injectors work at higher preshure and thus would load the cam lobe more, just a thought.
Early type enginge serial No prefix 10P to 14P, the later was 15P to 19P(from Haynes manual).
When was the change of motor fitted?
And was this at the same time the 3 hose fuel regulator was introduced?
To my knowledge the camshaft is identical across all versions.
There are however 2 versions of the rocker assy
Injector rocker shaft assy - To VIN 1A736339 - To end of 2001MY.
1 ERR7231 Rocker assy-injectors
2 ERR7065 Screw-adjusting-rockers
3 ERR5529 Nut-locking-adjuster
Injector rocker shaft assy - From VIN 2A736340 - From 2002MY.
1 MUI000040 Rocker assy-injectors
2 LGV000020 Screw-adjusting-rockers
3 ERR5529 Nut-locking-adjuster
Its definetely a late engine as its got the water cooled EGR, later type fuel block etc etc.
I will clean up the rocker assy and see if its got a number next time I see the car.
Pete - I would see if someone in metalurby and materials at UQ or QUT can give your their opinion (I'm sure you can do a cad-related barter/swap? ).
Killer may have some contacts?
