I run a V8 D2 but as an indication of what the gauge does vs actual temp movement. Using a Scangauge as a comparison with and without t/stat. The temps vs movement was taken with the sender suspended in a waterpot and compared with the scangauge and external thernocouple and display. The times taken were then tested in car with and without thermostat. External temps were 11-12 deg as in car tests were done over a number of days. Done at idle with only viscous fan connected.

    With;
    50deg, needle hasn't moved.
55deg, needle at bottom of vertical thermometer printed on gauge.
70deg, needle horizontal, inline with 2nd top horizontal line on thermometer. Stays here until 98 deg.
105-112deg, needle at top horizontal line of thermometer.
112-118 deg, needle shoots to top of display. Light comes on at approx 115deg.

    Without:

50deg, needle hasn't moved. Time to temp +4:28
55deg, needle at bottom of vertical thermometer printed on gauge. Time + 4:55
70deg, needle horizontal, inline with 2nd top horizontal line on thermometer. Stays here until 98 deg. Time to 70 + 6:32. Temps above here were not achievable for both engine longevity and feasability.
105-112deg, needle at top horizontal line of thermometer.
112-118 deg, needle shoots to top of display. Light comes on at approx 115deg.

Went for a drive today down to Queen Mary Falls and back (met a few other AULRO members),

We stopped at the look-out at Teviot Falls and I noticed the thermo fans were on however the temp gauge was on the first mark. So I checked the coolant level and there was still coolant in the overflow bottle. (a little low but visible)

Then as we left the gauge moved up to the second mark and stayed there, ( "Rick" had advised this was not a good level) but I put it down to the run up the hill.

Then we turned off onto the Gorge road and the gauge jumped to almost the red and then bounced up and down not holding a steady reading. At the third crossing I pulled up and checked the water level.... and it was down. (bugger) No lights came on

So I topped it up from the creek and it took approx 2 1/2 litres. After this the gauge stayed at the normal level for the rest of the day. I checked it again at Queen Mary Falls and also Boonah then on returning home again. Each time the level was correct.

I really should invest in a separate temp display system and the post from Clubagreenie has helped a little on understanding the range between the lines ( can't make things linear).
What is a good aftermarket temp gauge for the car?

A coolant level alarm. The temp sensor wont pick up a problem if there is no coolant around it. Personally I think that these are more important.

Agree there. I have the scan gauge because it gives me multiple real time and real data displays but the alarm is an instant warning of low water in the higest area of the system so should be before the gauge even moves.
