Replacing 300TDi oil cooler hoses - any tips/tricks?

    Hi all

About time I fixed the oil leak on the 1998 Defender. I have new hoses ordered as well as new o'rings for both ends.

Any tricks to this? Pinching the o'rings is a concern so care will be taken.

    Cheers

O rings didn't seem to be a problem - they slide on the fitting

A good set of flare nut spanners is good to have (although not absolutely necessary) - from memory the flare nuts may be different sizes on each hose.

On my defender I found the cooler hoses leaking where they were crimped.
I just ground and cut away the the crimp and the old hose.
From any hydraulic hose supplier youn can buy 1/2 ID oil resistant hose cheaply by the mtr... ( It looks like normal heater hose.)
Slide the new hose over the old pipe stubs and secure with normal hose clamps.......never had a problem since.

... that's where they usually go

... some people braze barbs on to make sure, but it's not a high pressure environment so hose clamps might do

count the number of old O rings you have after you pull the old pipes out.

Dont put the new ones on till you can account for all 4

    3 = mess

It does cause a mess when you only find three.

    Thanks guys...

I won't get to it this weekend, so it will have to wait until next weekend.

While I am at it, I will replace the gasket behind the oil filter head as it is a bit hard to see where the leak is actually coming from.

    Cheers

    Gday Andrew

I just last weekend replaced the radiator in our 300tdi defender and also all o'rings including the oil filter t/stat adaptor o'ring with new filter head gasket.

Ive been trying to find a leak around that area for ages so I replaced all the above but after all the work was done still found to have a leak, which i tracked back to a bolt.

The bolt is the one on the bottom of the bracket that holds the injector pump to the side of the block directly above the filter head its a real pain to get to as I found the leak after everything was put back together.Would have been easier to get to while filter head was off, anyway i unscrewed the bolt put a little sealant on it and screwed it back in tight so far so good.

So may not hurt just to check.....

Just copied this pic from Discomarks thread, this is the bracket and its the bolt hole on the left which when installed is the bottom bolt hole.
