    R380 problems

Hi, I am having intermittent problems with my gearbox, 1995 300TDI 5 speed disco. It will not always go into gear starting yesterday at trafic lights. prior to yesterday occasionally had a problem with one gear, but another gear would work, so did not think about it. Yesterday would not select any for a while. Then I got second and drove to side road.

If I put transferinto neutral can get gear, then transfer into high will allow me to drive. Once rolling it appears to change gear alright. Any suggestions.

Oh, and whenunderneath not rolling it makes a noise on changing gear.

Hi John, I'd say this is a sign of the clutch not releasing properly. The clutch or the cutch throwout fork may be on their way out. You may need to check the hydraulics aren't leaking or empty. If you try to hold the gear stick against the second gear synchro then quickly push forwards to first, it may go in for now. I suspect it will get worse quite quickly if the clutch is at fault.

the symtoms you edescribe sound like a clutch release problem as stated earlier i would look at the spigot bush throw out bearing and the clutch fork but lets not forget that the clutch is disengaged by hydraulic cylinders a master on the firewall and a slave on the gearbox , if these are faulty your clutch pedal would feel different from how it normally feels (spongey) i would have the clutch cylinders checked first as this is easier than pulling the box then if that is all ok then you will have to have the gearbox removed to see what has failed in the clutch judging by your description i would say your gearbox is ok

If hydraulics are OK I would say it is a dry/ seized spiggot bush.

    cheers

After posting this and going to meet a friend, I remembered yesterday, a loud bang happened. My wife thought that someone had run into us. I thought it may be a clunk from our Detroit locker which sometimes goes clunk, though this was louder than the usual clunk. Wondering now if something broke in the gearbox.

Also how hard is it to change boxes. We have a non-going TDI with blown motor at home.

Drain the gearbox and transfer oils and see what comes out. If something has broken there should be lots of bits.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
