    Monster TD5 Project

...Or, how to compete with current Common Rail engines. The goal here is to get close to a TDV63.0 in output (say, 600nM) without spending the related $20K ($10Kmax)

I've been looking at options for my next vehicle.
Want a manual that I can scratch without worry, so the D2 has to go.

Have been leaning toward a County 4BD1T for the body and torque, but not sure about the engine weight penalty/ hershness and the fact the figures aren't that much better than a chipped TD5 Manual.
    Soooooooo....
after trawling around the net (and more importantly, here) I am yet to compile a definative list of mods= 'X' torque/power/ % increase for the TD5 AND the resultant engineering 'fuses'or weak points in the Storm.

Could i please have your experiences of the above?
Obviously, the support systems are going to need to be similairly beefed up, so not for discussion here.

Engine yr (any difference/ strengths in Def/ D2/ D2a other than Ecu?):
    Engine K's when mods done:
    Turbo details (A/R, VNT):
    Chips:
    Injector mods:
    Intercoolers (Front/ top/ water-air):
    de-EGR:

    What broke?
Rebuild cost of the engine to suit the power upgrade?

    Thanks in advance.
    Dave.

I'm with you on this one Dave....I've been thinking of developing a thread outlining definitive modifications to the Td5 that work, highlighting the pros and cons etc...

Joe Hawkes at Airlie Beach has an aluminium Detroit 3-53N available. Add turbo, intercooler, and blower bypass you get 200 Detroit sized horses plus immense torque from 800 rpm clutch engagement up to governed rpm. These were made for the US Army for low ground pressure vehicles such as snow tractors.

    And they sound just great.

You will get on with Joe. He doesn't wear shoes either.

I know Lara claimed he was getting 590 NM out of his TD5 before the did the 2.8 upgrade so it is possible. Should imagine it will be expensive to go that far though

Gluttons for punishment or masochistic desires with deep pockets

Why not just get the TDV6 transplant kit, c/w computers already sorted, or fully converted engine from UK? Can't remember exactly where, Google TDV6 Discovery.

    $A = 0.63p

Brian, thanks. Will look into that. Thanks. Bloody hippies, eh!;-)

Rick, my opening line referred to$20k for a reason, that is the approx cost of a TD6. 3.0 conversion.
    There's always a 350 Chev diesel conversion + turbos. ;-);-)
    Thanks for the input, Dave.

From another thread on here, someone mentioned that a couple of the UK tuners are claiming up to 580Nm with the TD5.

There's nothing wrong with unit injectors, it's just that common rail is a cheaper system for the manufacturers.

The basic architecture of the TD5 is sound so trying to squeeze out more with a decent VNT, I/C, head work and tuning is worth the stuffing around IMO.

BTW, Quaife make a 6 speed dog 'box replacement for the R380 that would take the torque, but it's something like £10,000.

[edit]sorry, only 510Nm and 239 Hp, not something to sneeze at though http://www.aulro.com/afvb/1780692-post41.html

Rick, thanks, those were my thoughts. Applying conventional hot up techniques for a heck of an increase!
£10 000 dog box! Great in a Bowler, not so good for pootling around ;-)
An Isuzu box is an option to handle the twist.
    Thanks, Dave.
