    Head gasket 300tdi

Hey guys my over flow bottle was blowing coolant everywhere after the ol girl got hot on the way home.

I've pulled the head off to inspect the gasket, the gasket looks okay to me but I've never attempted anything like this so I wouldn't really know, now the worrying part is there is sand residue on the coolant holes is this a really bad sign?

Are those centre ports meant to be blocked?

There was also a bit of sand on 2 head bolts.

I understand that they usually go where yours appears to have let go (between 2 & 3).

Get the head checked for hardness, cracks (adjacent to glowplugs, valves inectors) etc, and IF useable - machined.

Be prepared to buy a new head.

When I did I purchased it from Turners (UK) and had it with fitting parts (bolts, gaskets) in 3 days.

FWIW, the AMC head I fitted looks far better in finish than the one in the pic.

I can imagine that you are wondering if the sand was from the original casting.

Take a look at these recent threads for info that is (hopefully) useful to you about price / supply / installation etc. - obviously there are a plentiful number of other threads on the subject on this site if you care to search.

Stacks, the head gasket has blown between 2 &3 cylinders and I'll bet that if you place a straight edge across the blackened area between 2 & 3 on the head you will find a dip in the head.
The sand seems to be alloy corrosion and those 3 triangular spots between the combustion areas are caused by corrosion, as if I said there is a dip in the head you will need to have the head surface milled and it may clean up those 3 spots.
Or you can buy a new head for around $1K, I recommend that if you get the head machined to use a Metal laminated gasket instead of a Composite gasket, I had the same problem as yours and after blowing 3 Comp. gaskets I went to a Laminated gasket and no more problems, others may disagree, but it works for me, good luck, regards Frank.

Thanks guys, I'll need to get a straight edge and ill have a good check around that area, I budgeted for a new head. Are the new style ones from paddocks any good? Or is turners the way to go.

ring them both if you like - we know turners are ok - I haven't heard any favourable reports about paddocks - others may have had a better experience

I bought my head last week from these blokes at Landy Imports Australia
Land Rover Defender Discovery 300 TDI Cylinder Head KIT | eBay
    off eBay.
Paid $1025 delivered to my door, took 3 days, and I can ring Rick in Qld. if I'm not happy.
That price includes all gaskets and bolts and exhaust studs, courier delivery to doorstep and the money stays in Australia.
I beleive that wherever you buy your head you will probably find they are all made by the same mob, Regards Frank.

that head is a bin job, judging by the corrosion. you could spend well over half what frank just paid for his new one trying to make a silk purse out of it.

JC, any idea of what causes that corrosion in those 3 spots, I can't remember if there are corresponding water jacket holes in the block, but for the life of me, why do the head gaskets have the triangular shaped holes for water that doesn't go anywhere, Regards Frank.

The biggest issue is no corrosion inhibitor use. I have pulled heads from these at big kms to see little or no corrosion due to proper maintenance.

    The block face is open, see the pic link below;

Thanks Justin ... some definite advice of type/brand of corrosion inhibitor would be appreciated.

I'm currently using the green Castrol antiboil/antifreeze simply because it's what's avaiIable here and I have used it for ever. Advice about your experience would be appreciated.
