Thread: Tyre type life

I've got some COOPER A/T light trucks on the Disco, done 30k so far and would have at least 10mm tread left. I reckon they will do at least 80k the way they are going.

Phoenix I think it goes something like this

x-ply last for eva as the are as tiugh as nails
radials
monoform
remould
retread

the difference between a remould and retread is that a remould you get new sidewalls as well as tread.
monoform is like a remould but using a better material ( i think )

Thanks for that Adam, that is pretty much what I thought, except that I thought radials would last longer than x-ply tyres :?

Might have to ask the guy at the shop when I get around to getting some tyres. Might be sooner than I thought, as I got a few dollars in that I had forgotten about.

Tyre sellers tell me radials last longer. I use x-plys on my Series III and inflate them to 60psi. They last more than 100,000km. The last lot lasted over 7 years of daily use. The current ones are over 2 years old with deep tread all round. The thicker sidewalls mean I haven't had a puncture in 10 years. I use truck steer tyres which gives me a long life and quiet highway use, and I have a set of custom xtra grips (very chunky tyres) on a 2nd set of rims for 4wdriving. I found chuncky tyres are only good for about 40,000km of highway use, so it's cheaper to have two sets. I just have a 2nd hand jeep service tyre as a spare for both sets.

On my Rangie I run radials, keeping these at 50-60psi keeps them lasting at least 100,000km. It handles sharper and brakes better.

When I tried recaps they lasted from Melb. to Alice Springs - don't go to recaps unless you're only doing slow alpine or farm work only.
