    Transmission Hose Gosh Darn It!

Well it seems as if I have some sort of gift!
You see I am about to embark on a few jobs on my TD5 Disco that I thought may be better done all at the same time. Replace intercooler, clean inlet manifold, fit winch and a few other smaller things. So I started researching what bits may need replacing over time that I could do whilst the front was off. I read about two things that can fail at the front of the car that I didn't want to do later - Harmonic Balancer and Auto trans oil lines.

After having played all long weekend I had the old girl over the pit at work checking things over, changing fluids etc and today I decided to drive her home.

About 100m from my workshop floor the trans oil cooler hose lets go! Talk about karma. Worst bit was the large puddle of trans fluid which flowed down the slope of the main access road before I could grab a spill kit. Guess I'll spend some time on the karcher tomorrow.

Anyways, I'll remove the pipes over the next few days and investigate whether I should replace them or whether my good friends at Enzed can hook a digger up.

I will probably have to purchase a harmonic balancer as well to defeat the karma monster.

BTW, fluid goes absolutely everywhere. It'll take an apprentice quite a while to clean the engine bay.

    Cheers

    tranmission hose

Oh Yeah! dumps real quick! Good news is if you are cruising on the highway it dumps it so fast that the auto usually shuts down before any serious damage is done. Bad news for those behind you.

    TIP
If your tail gate has oily spots on the paint work, this can indicate a leak of oil or tranny fluid. It might not actually show up much on the road. But drips from leaks often get carried around under the chassis air stream and get caught in the air turbulence at the rear. A customer noticed some oily residue on my tail gate and commented I had a tranny leak.( I thought no)
I discovered it was engine oil from a leak at the rear of the valley gasket. After towing my boat the other day and grabbing the safety chain on the trailer I found part of the length had oil dripping from it. But most of the underneath of the Disco was oil free. So check your back door for signs of greasy residue

    Well, a quick update.
Whilst the cooler lines were off at Enzed, I decided to take the opportunity to remove and replace the intercooler with a D2A intercooler and remove and clean the inlet manifold.
What a surprise! The removed intercooler was very very very sludgy! Not just a little oily or a little carbony but a lot sludgy. Even though I was replacing it we cleaned it out just to see how dirty it was. We flushed degreaser through it for a solid 10 min before the degreaser come out relatively clean.

The manifold actually had little stalagtites of carbon and a thick coating of sludge. We ended up soaking it overnight in brakleen to dissolve the carbon then spun a 'bottle brush' through it repeatedly in the degreaser bath.

I'll get the lines back tomorrow, re-assemble and see how she goes. I expect the build up may have contributed to a bit of my annoying lag.

I'll report in again tomorrow night

Some may ask why I chose to have the cooler lines remanufactured instead of replaced. A long story, but the franchise I use for other stuff has actually done a few TD5's including one of their employees. They warrant their work and actually replace the rubber and use new fittings. PM if you want details or cost.

    Cheers

    So far so good!
Enzed have done a great job on the lines/hoses!
The only bit they couldnt replace were the QD's at the cooler end but they said they were in good serviceable nick.

Threw it all back together Thurs arvo. Took a little longer than expected due to my cautious nature and desire to do it once only.

Only driven a few km but initial signs are very positive. Minimal lag. Almost instant power. To be fair the weather has been mild, so a hot day will be the test. If this solves my probs, I'd recommend an intercooler and manifold 'clean/scrub' to all TD5's owners. Similarly, please investigate repairing/remanufacturing your trans cooler lines before purchasing new.

    Cheers
